The Waste Lands Board expect shortly to have handed over to them the whole of the confiscated lands, which will be brought in to exhaust the volunteer land scrip, amounting to thirteen thousand pounds. The Corporation have resolved to strike a general rate of one shilling in the pound on July Ist. The Improvement Commissioner, in reply to a question by a correspondent, states that Sir Julius Vogel has paid rent on allotments leased. Both are now being offered by Sir J. Vogel’s agent. A telegram from Knipnra reports a barque ashore at the Heads, supposed to be the Foronia from Wellington. She was chartered to load timber for Melbourne, at Aratapu, for Mecsp John Keid and Co.

Barrel, a master mariner, writes to the Star, expressing his belief that the May Queen is still afloat between Eoa and Plystaarc Islands. It is supposed the captain cub away the masts to relieve the vessel. At the Chamber of Commerce annual meeting to-day, the report expressed a hope that now life would bo infused, and the influence of the body bo augmented by the late increase of members. The committee regret the suggestions regarding the Debtors and Creditors Act were not adopted last session by the Government, and believe that unless the law of bankruptcy be amended in the manner proposed, it will fail to attain (he ends aimed at by the Legislature. The report expresses satisfaction at the Pacific Mail arrangements, and thanks the Wellington Chamber for their prompt cooperation. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £lO9. Dr. Campbell, the retiring chairman, delivered an able address. He considered fourteen members of the Harbour Board too many and unworkable. Their talking power was excessive. He condemned the dock site.

The whaling ship Alaska has arrived at Russell. She had taken 700 barrels of oil in one year. The Ladoga has 110 barrels, and another 150.

The schooner Canterbury arrived at Samoa, on April 12th sinking, with all her sails split, or blown away. Tire vessel was laid up, as the passengers had no money to purchase sails.

At the shop of Hislop, to-day, smoke was observed issuing from between the lining boards. When the boards were pulled away the flames rushed out, but were extinguished, when pieces of paper, bones, pieces of raw meat and candles, and several wax vestas were found. It is supposed that the fire was caused by a rat eating a match. The lowest tender for the Kaipara Railway is by Larkinson and O’Brien, for £16,800; the next by Goodall, for £23,000; the highest nearly £50,000. Moanatairis —Buyers, £9 7s 6d ; Colonial Bank, 42s to 42s 6d; Caledonian (double), buyers, 78s.

The opening of the Wanganui and Turakina line to-day was a great success. The weather was beautiful. A train of nine carriages and four trucks left crowded with passengers. Fire hundred people were taken from Wanganui. The event was celebrated by a luncheon. Dunedin, May 17. The Escort for 'the month aggregates 6751 ounces. The finance committee of the Harbor Board recommends dispensing with services of the Assistant-Harbormaster, thereby effecting a saving of £3OO a year. The following tenders were received for the construction of steam-launch for the Harbor Board :—Davidson and Co., £2300 ; Sparrow and Co., £1525 ; Kincaid, McQueen and Co., £1496. An inquiry is now going on regarding the stranding of the schooner Lochiel on the sands at Otago Heads, on Saturday. [prom correspondents of the press.] Wellington, May 17. A meeting of creditors in the estate of Janies O’Shea, merchant,was held at his office this afternoon, when a statement of accounts were submitted. The liabilities arc £23,623 6s lid; contingent liabilities, £5530 15s; total, £29,154 Is lid, of which £3041 9s 6d is secured; assets, £BIB7 14s 6d; deficiency, £20,966 7s sd. The meeting adjourned till to-morrow afternoon, in order that the representatives of large creditors in Melbourne and London might arrive, Timaru, May 17. Reports from the McKenzie Country state the whole of the district is one mass of snow, which is lying fifteen feet deep in some places. The hunt to-day near Timaru was a great success, and the b est yet held.

Wreck of the Ship Ocean Mail at Chatham Islands. Wellington, May 17.

The principal insurances on the Ocean Mail arc in flic South British, £7000; New Zealand, £20,000, £IO,OOO of which is reinsured ; National, £16,000, £12,000 of which is reinsured ; Batavia, £5000; Victoria, 1075; other insurances in foreign companies. Particulars are not obtainable. The vessel was wrecked three days after leaving Wellington.

The ship Ocean Mail, which was wrecked at the Chatham Islands on the 19th March, was a vessel of 1039 tons. She -was commanded by Captain John Watson, was chartered by the New Zealand Shipping Company, and loaded here for London. She and the Avalanche left on the morning of the 16th of March last, and an exciting race homo between the two was looked forward to. She had the following passengers:—Misses Harrison and Jenkins, Messrs Cotleer, Nathan, and Conway. Her cargo consisted of 4892 bales of wool, 586 quarter bales and pockets of wool, 140 cases of preserved meats, 15 bales of skins, 4 bales of leather, 251 casks of tallow, and 15 tons of sundries, valued at £78,000. The following insurances were made on her cargo here, as far as wo have been able to ascertain : —South British, £7072, of which £2072 lias been reinsured. National losses £4OOO, Victoria £1075, New Zealand upwards of £20,000, all of which, excepting £IO,OOO, is reinsured. Batavia under £SOO. The Standard lose nothing by her. It is believed that the vessel was insured in England.
