AUCKLAND AUTUMN RACES
[By Telegraph.] [PEOM A COKEESPONDENT OP THE PEESS.]
Auckland, May 11.
Large numbers of horses arc in training for the Autumn Eace Meeting. " Hotspur," in the Star, writes : "Acceptances and general entries are to be on the 28th, and then we shall know for certain, but at present the following are the probable starters: — Champagne Walter's Venus, Transit; Leonard's Venus, Buckland's Queen Mab, Watt's Longlands, and Wynyard's Jessamine, Lady Coventry, and possibly another. Peatfield's Clipstone has gone lame. Venus, Transit, and Longlands have been favorites, but Queen Mab is coming daily to the front in betting. Opawa, I regret to say, will not be up. I understand Hippocampus will represent Walters, instead of Kingfisher, in the Handicap, for which I expect; to see six runners—Ariel, Elsa, Bide-a-Wee, Hippo., Magician, and Shannon. A fine race may be looked forward to for this, as the handicapping is very close. Ariel and Shannon are the favorites. Vavasour's pair, Shaughraun and Bide-a-wee, arrived in the Taupo, and were both out on the course yesterday for walking exercise. Owen McG-ee's were out on Monday morning. Both the steeplechasers, Perfume and Connaught Eanger, did a long walk. Elsa went a good spin, and looked well. Yesterday Thorpe was out early with Don and Steman. The former, who looks very rough, only walked, but the latter did a slow canter of two miles going in very fair form. The latter, Magician, and Shannon had a two mile gallop together, but Taylor's chestnut was too much for Black at the finish. 1 cannot say what weights were up, but always expect the same result at anything like handicap weights. Donald is getting Shannon into very good fettle, and there may happen such a thing as his upsetting the cracks yet. After _ this, Queen Mab and Jessamine had a spin together. The two kept together for only two hundred vards, and then the Queen began to creep ahead. She continued to draw away to the distance, where she was fully thirty yards ahead. Bucklancl's hoy then cased'Jus mount, and she came in first by about six lengths."
