Much dissatisfaction was expressed yesterday at the manner in which the postal arrangements in connection with the arrival and despatch of the English and Australian mails was carried on. The inward mail was not delivered till after the box for the outward mail laid closed. The result was that, with few exceptions, merchants were unable to reply to letters received by the Eingarooma. A rule nisi for a new trial has been granted in the ease Russell v Smytides, on ground of misdirection by the Judge. Fire at Kumara. Kumara, May 8. A fire broke out in Tuball’s general store last night. The store was entirely destroyed with two private houses adjoining. The fire was prevented from spreading to the adjacent buildings by the exertion of the inhabitants. Several late members of the Grey mouth and Hokitika brigades rendered valuable assistance There is no local brigade. Tuball is the sole sufferer. His loss is estimated at over £2OOO. He was insured in the South British for £2250. He w Plymouth, May 8. At the Supreme Court there was only one person for trial, X. E. Meredith, late clerk to the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Carlyle and Hawera, who was found guilty of embezzlement, and sentenced to two years imprisonment. Earthquake at Taranaki.
