* INTERPROVINCIAL. [PER PRESS AGENCY.] Auckland, May 7. The Stella leaves this evening. The Hon. Mr Whitaker is a passenger. At the declaration of the poll for City West to-day Dr Wallis was declared to have been elected by a majority of 211. At a meeting of the Acclimatisation Society to-day it was stated that 200,000 ova had been ordered from California. The secretary was instructed to write to the Otago Acclimatisation Society to make arrangements for a supply of trout ova. A letter was received from tbe Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, apologising for the rumor circulated that they had not had a fair proportion of the salmon ova lately imported, and stating that they were perfectly satisfied they had been fairly treated. Port Chalmers, May 7. The schooner Argosy, which has arrived from Hokianga, reports that when oft' the Kaikouras, on the 2nd instant, she passed a brigantine heading in for the land. From the descriptions given of her it is thought she may prove to be the missing brigantine Kate Brain. The Wairoa Bar Blockaded. [from a correspondent of the press.] Napier. The Maoris, at their meeting, strongly object to pay County rates. One orator remarked “I do not like this thing (the Council) as it is not working for the good of the Maori. Such acts as wo condemn will be the leading of (ho Maori tribes to death.” The Wairoa bar is still closed, owing to heavy sea. Provisions are rising in price. No sea communication has been held for nearly a month. Three steam vessels are lying in Napier loaded, and the Menai (steamer) lias been lying at Wairoa ever since the blockade. On Saturday a policeman attempted to arrest a young man named Connor. His brother interfered. The policeman hit him severely with his baton. A crowd of men took part against the policeman, who was knocked down, and both men were rescued. Alleged Perjury. [from a correspondent of the press.] Akaroa, May 7. Mrs Adams and Maggie Henderson were arrested this morning on a charge of wilful and corrupt perjury in the case of H. Watkins v. Adams. On the application of the police the case was remanded for eight days. The Case of Russell v. Smythies. [PROJf A correspondent of the press.] Dunedin, May 7. From what fell from the Judge in Banco to-day it is probable that a new trial will be granted in Russell v. Smythies for misdirection.
The Star's special telegrams from Teremakau report that the shafts bottomed give 21 dwts. to three dishes. The miners on the ground say that it will prove the Ballarat of New Zealand. The following is the text of the document which Millar threw at his pastor’s head yesterday : —“ Before God, and in the presence of this congregation, I solemnly protest against the unconstitutional and illegal manner in which the English Presbyterian Hymn-book is being introduced into this congregation, pending the judgment of the Supreme Court of the Church on appeals taken to it, and because its introduction at the instance of a small minority of the membership of this congregation will virtually prevent many from joining in praise to God in His own appointed way.” An office-bearer, writing to the Star, says the new book was agreed to be introduced by nearly the unanimous vote of the congregation. Tapanui’s agitation for severance from Tuapeka County meets with much opposition. Another part of the district —Cardrona —now joins Cromwell in asking for a separate county.
