SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB RACES. [By Telegraph.] [FROM A CORRESPONDENT OF THE PRESS.] First Day. Tr maru, April 26. The South Canterbury Jockey Club meeting commenced to-day. The weather was charming, the attendance and the arrangements good, but the sport was not of the first order. Apropos of the arrangements, wo are glad to hear that it is the intention of the S.C.J.O. to erect a permanent stand next season, for the temporary one to-day was not a creditable construction in any way. The going was very fair. The event started with punctuality, and the various officials were quite an fait at their respective duties. The secretary, Mr Slanscll, being most indefatigable, and the starter, Mr Martclli, wielding the flag with his usual ability. The sport commenced with the Maiden Plate, for which Lady Mary, a Lilliputian mare, pedigree unknown, walked over, and then saddled up for the South Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap. Danebury was reserved for the Flying Stakes, and thus the contest lay between Mr Delamain’s pair and the uncertain Cloth of Gold, who, in spite of his looking in very fair trim, received little or no support. Templeton was hardly the pink of form he showed at Oamaru, but lie stripped well: and the fretful Puuga also seemed in fair buckle. The race requires little description. Punga, with -whom Mr Delamain declared to win, made play for almost her distance
—a mile and a half. Here Cloth of Gold took up the running, and favored by his light impost and new pricker Waddell, put on him expressly, won easily. Templeton, who came up when Ins stable companion had shot her bolt, was second. The Cloth, from Ids running in this race, seems a good goods for t he Timaru Cup on the second day; but he ran so unkindly, (hat he is dangerous to back. Only two came to the post for the Jfovel Race, which was won easily by Steamer, hive acceptors figured on the card for the Flying Handicap, and all came to the pest. Danebury, in spite of his fist, was entrusted with the greatest share of public confidence, and after him Titania, with whom I\Fr Delamain declared to win, was the most supported, while the Chief, who was looking well, had a few friends at the price offered. Head Heat was not, looking no to the mark, nor, indeed, was Titania, while Ellin King seemed very pink. The race was a good one. Hanehury got away, as usual, best, and made play for more than half the journey, where Titania made her
effort, but, dying away immediately, was supplanted by her stable-companion, Elfin King, who, challenging the favorite at the rails, had the best of the run in, and won rather a. close thing by a short length. I had almost forgotten to say that Steamer was sold after the Novel race to Mr Jonas for £3l.
