The meeting this year promises to retain its usual prestige. At a meeting of the committee, held on Tuesday evening, a most spirited offer was made by Messrs Compton and Parkin to erect a grand stand of a permanent character, which offer was accepted by the committee. The work will be pushed forward at once, so as to be completed for the forthcoming race's. The plans, which have been prepared t>y Mr C. 0. Fooks, were inspected by the committee, and_ the building promises to be a most and orna-
mental structure, and will obviate the dead loss with which the committee have had to contend in former years in putting up a temporary stand. BALCLXJTHA JOCKEY CLUB RACES. [by telegraph.] Balclutha, April 19. The weather was magnificent. The attendance was only about 200. The course was in good order. Maiden Plate, 15 sovs ; 1£- miles—Tele - machus, 1; Joker, 2 ; Freedom, 3; Raven, 4; McKennas, nowhere. Telemachus took the lead at the grand stand, and never was caught ; Shaw held all the way. Clutha Handicap, 35 sovs.; 1) miles— Spinaway, 1; Atlas, 2 ; Bothwell, 3 ; Stanley, 4 ; Welcome, 5. Bothwell took the lead at the start, but after passing the grand stand Spinaway went to the front, and kept it to the finish, Atlas being two lengths behind, Hack Selling Race, 15 sovs; 1? miles — Clyde, 1 ; St. Andrew, 2 . Rufus, Roebuck, Freedom, and Atlas had a false start. St. Andrew got off with the lead ; the race was neck and neck between Clyde and St. Andrew throughout; St. Andrew made an effort at the finish, and another jump would have given him the stakes. Flying Handicap, 15 sovs.; 1 mile — Spinaway, 1; Telemachus, 2 ; Colva, 3 ; Sergeant, 0. This was a very good race. The whole racing passed off satisfactorily, and good racing and sport are expected tomorrow. AUCKLAND AUTUMN RACES. Auckland, April 19. The nominations for the Birthday HandL cap, Auckland Handicap Steeplechase, of the Autumn Meeting on the 25th May, close tomorrow. SALES OF THOROUGHBREDS. MR NOSWORTHY’S SALE. Yesterday Messrs Ford & Co. held asalc of thorough-bred stock at Mr Nosworthy’s farm. There was a good attendance of breeders and others, and the lots sold brought satisfactory prices. The sale started with the two-year-olds. The first to show w r as Tyro, b c., by Talisman, dam No Name (full sister to Scandal), by Traduccr, out of Emma, by Gil Bias, out of Emily by Operator, Flora Mclvor by Emigrant, Cornelia by Grasshopper out of Manto. Mr Newton’s eloquence, however, failed to get a purchaser for him, and ho was passed at eighty guineas. Next came Tribune, hr c (full brother to Envy and Talisman), by Traducer, dam Azucena, by Towton, &c.; entered in Canterbury and Wellington Derby; who was purchased by Mr Cbrsbie, after a little smart bidding, for £2OO. Mr Newton then submitted Mufti, ch c," by Traducer, dam Flatiron, by Peter Flat, out of Emma; entered in Canterbury Derby and Lcgcr; Wellington and Dunedin Derby ; and Victorian Derby and Legcr. He found a purchaser in Mr A. Linder for £3OO. The flower of the flock, the celebrated colt Lc Loup, was then marshalled forth. Lc Loup is ach c (full brother to Lurline), by Traducer, dam Mermaid, by King Tom Waterwitch by the Flying Dutchman, &c. ; entered in Canterbury Derby and Lcgcr ; Wellington and Dunedin Derby ; and Victorian Derby and Leger. For this colt there was keen competition, ’and, ultimately he was knocked down to Mr L. Walker for 1100 guineas. The only other sales effected were Natator, ch c. by Traducer, dam Waterwitch, by Camden, out of Mermaid; bought by Mr Ward for 246 guineas; and St. Leonards, black colt, 2 years, by Talisman, out of Amuri, by Skeleton—out of Lady .lane Grey, by St. Aubyn ; bought by Mr D. O’Brien for £559. Subsequent to the sale Mr Nosworthy disposed of Merlin, by Blue Boy—Malice, to Mr G, G. Stead for the sum of 150 guineas,
