CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday, April 19. (Before G-. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.) Drunk and Disorderly,— James Gapes, arrested for being drunk and assaulting tlie the constable, was lined (JOs. B. Butler, an old offender, was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment with hard labor. J. R. Pawsey was lined JOs and Is cab hire ; John Snooks LOs, and George Brown 20s. Robert Mycr. tor being drunk and violently resisting the police, was sentenced to one months’ imprisonment with hard labour. An inebriate who ippeared for the first time was fined ss. House a rea k ing. —Peter Christie, charged with breaking into a bouse in Merivalc Lane, was remanded until the 21st inst. Adulteration op Food Act. —Charles Poagram was summoned toy selling a pint of

milk, on the Bth of March, the same being adulterated. A certificate from Professor Bickerton was handed in, showing that the milk in question contained ten per cent of water. Defendant denied that he had adulterated the milk, and said the cow gave a. certain amount of water in her milk. His Worship suggested that the cow must have an iron tail. Defendant had been previously fined for a similar offence, and his Worship imposed a fine of (10s. Breach of Licensing Act. A case against Lucy Davey, for selling brandy and wluskey in her house, was adjourned until the 3rd of May for the production of witnesses. Abusive Language. —lsabella Lee was summoned for using abusive language towards Charles Tetley. A cross summons, for assault, was heard at the same time. Mr Joynt appeared for Mrs Lee. Lengthy evidence was given, showing that an ill-feeling has existed between the families for a long time, and having administered a little salutary advice, his Worship fined each of the defendants 20s, allowing them also to pay the expenses of their numerous witnesses. Mary McLaren was ordered to pay 6s 6d costs for using abusive language to Sophia Thompson. A similar information against Mary Fogarty was dismissed. Assaults. —Samuel Parker was summoned for assaulting Valentine Esstelbourne. The parties arc tailors, working in the same shop. Defendant, it was alleged, tickled complainant in the side, on the afternoon of the date mentioned, who immediately returned the compliment by dropping accidentally a 141 b goose on his friend’s toe. A fight ensued. His Worship remarked on the foolishness of practical joking, and ordered defendant to pay 5s and costs. Frederick Hammond was summoned for assaulting Mrs E. Miller. Mr Thomas appeared for complainant, and Mr Slater for defendant. After hearing evidence, the Bench dismissed the case. Slaughter-house Licenses. —-The following applications were granted:—Danzic Cant, section 78, Riccarton district ; Clarkson Brothers, near Templeton pound; W. B. Clarkson, section 154, Spreydon district; John Gilmore, section 1144, Hcathcote; Thomas Green, section 1141, Hcathcote; Thomas Green, section 1487, Ha Is well; J. T. Dingle, section 1139, Avon district. LYTTELTON. Thursday, April 19. [Before AV. Donald, Esq., R.M.] Civil Cases. —Rich v Durham; claim, £3; judgment for plaintiff; costs. 6s. Pearson v Robinson; claim, 15s; judgment by default; costs 10s. Same v Jackson; claim, £2 13s 6d ; defendant ordered to pay 10s per month ; costs, 6s. Brown v Teague; claim, £4 11s lOd ; judgment by default; costs 9s. Collector of Education Rate v Teagac, claim £1; judgment by default, and 10s costs.
