The third emigrant ship for Sydney, with 350 souls on board, is leaving New York for Svdncv to-day. ' The' Chancellor of the Exchequer's Budget estimates the surplus at the end of the year to be £145,000. He estimates the revenue of the United Kingdom at £79,000,000, and the expenditure at £7<5,790,000. There is to be no increase or remission of taxation. In a fire in one of the hotels at St. fifty persons perished.

IXTERPROVIXCIAL. Auckland, April 16. The case of Niccol v Stephenson was commenced in the Supreme Court to-day. The plaintiff claims £361, the proceeds of a vessel. The money was entrusted to the defendant, and was lost. The defendant pleads thai he never understood he was responsible for the money, and showed no negligence. At the conclusion of the evidence, Judge Gillies summed up very strongly against the plaintiffs, and the jury found a verdict for the defendants. Ross, April 16. At the nomination of a member of the General Assembly for the Totara district, Joseph G-rimmond, John McG-affin, and the Hon. W. Crisborne were proposed. The show of hands was in favor of G-rimmond. A poll demanded for McG-affin. (From a corresvondr.iit of the Press.) DtjnediX, April 15. At the interview bet ween the deputation of Licensed Victuallers and the Hon. Donald Reid, it was suggested that there should be one chief revenue officer in each island, to work in conjunction with the police. The Governor's stay here is expected to extend over four or five days. The Mayor has received a telegram that the Governor will arrive in Dunedin on Friday morning. A deputation from the Licensed Victuallers' Association interviewed the Hon. Mr Reid today, and urged that the Government should take steps to conserve the interests of the trade, especially in preventing sly-grog selling. Mr Reid thought the Government would support legislation for the appointment of revenue officers, but as the license money went to the Corporation it should bear the expense of any such department. In reply to the deputation he said he was not in favor of publichouses being open on Sunday. AsiuirßTOX, April 16. At the election of four members of the school committee to-day, there was considerable excitement, and the election was keenly contested. The candidates were Winter, Friedlander, Rose, Leggctt, St Hill, and Rovle. The first, four were declared elected.
