NEWS OF THE DAY
Official.—Mr Blaekctt, Assistant Engineer, and Mr Seed, Secretary and Inspector of Customs, are at present on a visit to Christchurch in connection with their official duties. Oddfellows' Hall. —ln onsecpience of the Assembly Ball being held in the Hall this evening, there will be no performance to-night, but on Wednoday evening the Mirror will be again exhibited. Gaiety THEATItK. Notwitstanding attractions elsewiieiv. there was an excellent attendance at this theatre last eveninz, wh- n the programme of the previous evening wan repeated most sue •essfully. The same bill will be repeated this evening. Shipment of Donkeys.—There was rather a novel shipment by the s.s. Wellington yesterday. It consisted of fifteen donkeys, who showed they were thoroughbred by the intense obstinacy they displayed. They were shipped for Du'nedin by Messrs Dixon and Trestrail.
Ashley School Tbeat.—-This popular local fete was held on Thursday, 12th inst,, when the children and their friends to the number of 160 spent a most enjoyable day in the Acclimatisation Grounds and Museum. Though late in the season the day was beautifully fine, and all went " merry as a marriage bell'."
Kangtoka Football Club. —The first, game in connection with this Club was played on Saturday, in Mr 11. Blackett's paddock. Sides were chosen by Messrs E. and T. Chapman, and a good "match followed between eighteen players on both sides. Mr T. Chapman's side" obtained two goals, and were declared to be tho winners of the game. AsiiBURTO" Forks. —A public meeting was held in the Forks School for the purpose of considering the report of the overseer of the Waimakariri Conservancy Board as to the best means of slopping the overflow of the Ashbuvton River on Alford Forest road. A scries of resolutions were passed, which will be published anon. The Pbixck oi- Wales's Exacted y ISIT .—The following is the text of "Atlas's" paragraph in the World: —"I understand that the Prince of Wales has fully determined to carry out the project of paying a visit to Australia and ]Sew Zealand, which the success and pleasure of his Indian tour first led him to conceive. The subject has not formally taken shape, but. I believe the Prime Minister is cognisant of and approves of the projected visit to the Antipodes." Hunt Club. —A general meeting of the subscribers to this club was held last evening at, Eadcliffe's Hotel; Mr 11. P. Lance in the ahair. A letter was read from Mr Rollcston cesigning his position as president, The rmuial report was read, which showed that £579 8s f>d had been received, and £513 os 9d expended for the twelve months, including the original cost of the hounds, building kennels, and general maintenance, leaving a balance of £GG 2s 9d to credit. The report, as read, was adopted. The following gentlemen were then elected as officers for the ensuing year, viz. : —President —Mr 11. P. Lance. Master—Mr A. Cardale. Secretary and treasurer—Mr C. F. Barker. Committee —Messrs Cradock, Lewis, Dudley, Woodman, Egan, Brittan, Dalgleish, Oh P. Williams, Barker, Cardale, Grierson, Money, Martelli, A. Cox, Orbell, Kimbell, Parsons, Buss, King, Hurse, A. Saunders, Haydon, W. Saunders, H. P. Lance, and J. R, Pearson. Totes of thanks tp the retiring officers wore passed, as also a special one fo the late lion. secretary, Mr F. H. Moore, who is leaving the province,
