MAGISTRATES' COURTS.

OHRISTOHURCH Tuesday, April 17. [Before G-. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.] Bheacii of Public House Okdixance. — Edward Rivenhill, proprietor of the Caversham Hotel, was charged, on summons, with keeping liis licensed "house open and selling drink during prohibited hours on the 30th of March (Good Friday). Mr Thomas appeared for the defendant'. William Hill called, stated that on above date he had a pint of beer at the hotel between eleven and twelve o'clock, and paid for it. Mr Thomas called a servant in defendant's employ, who deposed to the last, witness coming to the gite with three lodgers, and because he would not be allowed inside he said that he would go and lay an information. Witness did not see Hill in'the house that day, and the barman was away out of town. Hill re-called, again distinctly stated that he was in the bar that morning, and went back to the house a second lime. Fined £5, and 6s Gd expense of witness. Diti'XK and Disorderly.—William Frew, arrested for being drunk at the railway station, was fined ss, and Is cab fare ; Richard Xing, 20s, and Is cab fare. 8. 0. Somerville, arrested for striking a man and creating a disturbance in the Royal Hotel, was lined 20s. An inebriate, who appeared for the first time, was lined ss. Thomas Cock, for drunkenness, was fined 40s; C. O'Mallcy, 10s ; and Robert Meyer, 10. Wife Desertion. —F. White was. brought up, charged with having deserted his wife and family. Mrs White, called, stated that her husband had left town and gone up country, working on the railway. Sho had to live on credit during his absence, and since his return to town he had not lived at home, and had insulted her when she met him. Defendant had made no provision for herself or family. She had four children, Defendant referred to bis wife's temper, and was ordered to pay ten shilling weekly towards the support of each of his two younger children.
