LATEST MOM E 0 ROPE AND AUSTRALIA. [By SmniAiuxK Cable.] EUROPEAN. War Imminent. Wool Depressed. Wheat Market Excited., London, April 14. Lord Derby, in the House of Commons, expressed regret that the circular of the Porte was against peace. The Marquis of llartington, in moving for the production of additional papers, asked how the Grovermnent reconciled the protocol with the integrity and independence of the Porte. Mr Hardy, Secretary for War, refused the papers, and said England's last word was in favour of peace, and strong objections were uttered against war being made with Turkey. England signed the protocol to afford Russia a chance to disarm. The motion of the Marquis of llartington was withdrawn. INTERPROVINCIAL. Southerton on the New Zealand Cricketers. Wellington, April 16. Mr Southerton, of the All England Eleven, in a letter to a private gentleman at Marton, gives his opinion of the best men to represent New Zealand in the intercolonial cricket contests. He says at such places as Taranaki, Nelson, Greymouth, he could not find any one to recommend, except Morse at Grreymouth if hard up for a left-handed bowler. At Invercargill there is only Reade, who is good at both bowling and batting. He thinks Cross and Anson are the only ones at Wellington who showed they were likely to hold their own on a good wicket. The best at Auckland are Robinson, Tracy, and Buckland. The first can bat and bowl; the second is not a very stylish bat, but his resolution is likely at any time to pull him through; the third is a fair bowler, but no bat. Dunedin has good bats in Dixon, Nicholls, Millington, Fulton, and Spring, the latter being the best wicketkeeper he saw in the colony ; Dixon, Millington, Everist also being good bowlers. He has no doubt Christchurch must form the nucleus of any team, as there he found the best all round cricket, Corfe, Leach, and Stevens being first-class bats with plenty others ; good bowlers, too, like Frith, Sweet, and Ashby; good fieldsmen, and the best longstop in Alpe. He considers them the Club of the colony. They only want a better wicket to play on. Arrived—Excelsior, brigantine, from Lyttelton.

(From a correspondent of the Press ) Di'nkdin, April 14. The news from the Waikaka rush is good, several new shafts having been bottomed on payable gold, but the extent of grounddoes not warrant a large rush. In the Supremo Court to-day, Mr Stout applied for a ride nisi calling upon Joseph Mackay, of Milton, to show cause why lie should not be committed for contempt. The facts are — On the last Chamber day application was made calling upon Mackay to show cause why prohibition should not issue to the District Court, at Tokomairiro, on the ground that the Supreme Court had clearly jurisdiction in the matter, and on that occasion his counsel obtained an adjournment on the ground that sufficient time had not been given. A meeting of creditors was convened for the 12th instant, but, apparently hearing of these proceedings in the Supreme Court, no creditors attended. Thereupon Mackay issued a special edition of the Bruce Herald, which is the Gazette in bankruptcy, in which he intimated that in consequence of no creditors having attended the meeting, it was his intention to apply at the first sitting of the District Court, to be held at Milton, for his discharge. The rule was granted.
