LOWER HEATHCOTE

Messrs Thomas Hayward, H. A. Bamford, J. D. Davis, and A. Beaumont retired by rotation. The attendance was small. The following is a [portion of the report, winch was adopted : Since the last general meeting, the work ot draining the school grounds has been successfully carried out, and is found to be a great benefit. . , . Several changes have been made m the teaching staff during the past year. In May last, Mr Douglas resigned his appointment in this school, for the purpose of accepting an engagement in Westland. The vacancy was filled by Master Abel Webber, one of the scholars attending this school. Miss O'Callahan, being above the age allowed for a pupil teacher, was removed, by direction of the Board, and Miss McHarg, also a scholar attending this school, was appointed to fill her place. The number of children on the roll for the quarter ending the 31st of March last is 241, viz., 143 boys and9B girls; the average attendance being 17S, viz., 108 boys and 70 girls. Your committee have called the attention of Board to the great trouble and annoyance which the householders are put to by the present mode of collecting the education rates, and have recommended the Board to make some arrangement with the Road Board so that the rates may be paid at the Road Board office. There being only four members nominated, viz., H. A. Bamford, Thomas Hayward, J. A. Morgan, and A. C. Fyfe, these were declared duly elected.
