In the Supreme Court William Gibbons, aged eighteen, for indecent assault on a girl aged eight, was found guilty; sentence deferred. Peter McGrath, for brutally beating his wife, was sentenced to three years’ penal servitude. Eliza Simmons, receiving stolen property, was acquitted. During the proceedings a juryman, named Benjamin McKerrah, escaped, for which ho was fined £3. The ninth half-yearly meeting of the South British Insurance Company was held to-day. The report is as follows : —“ Sum received premium account, £57,90816s lid; interest received accrued, £379012s 2d; transfer fees, £l7 15s ; losses and rc-insuraneo account, £30,719 13s 2d ; agents’ commission, salaries, printing general expences, £10,105 12s 7d; amount standing to credit of investing account, £110,844 11s lOd ; balances standing to credit of profit and loss account at close of hooks, including interest and amount brought forward from last half year, was £20,962 Is 3d. Insurance Companies being constantly liable to extraordinary losses, your directors feel that it is necessary gradually to strengthen the reserve fund. They have therefore carried to the reserve £IO,OOO, making £40,000. This leaves a balance of £10,963 Is 3d, from which the directors recommend the payment of a dividend of 2s per share, being at the rate of 10 per cent, per annum on the paid-up capital of the company. Shareholders will bo glad to learn that the new offices of the company at Dunedin arc completed, and that the business of the Agency is now transacted therein. It is a handsome and commodious building, in a first-class position. Plans for the offices of the company at Christchurch have been approved, and the erection of the building will be shortly commenced. The company arc much indebted to the Dunedin and Christchurch Board of Directors for the trouble taken in regard to securing excellent sites and offices. The Brisbane office, it is expected, will he completed and occupied before the close of the present halfyear.” The report having been adopted, votes of thanks were passed to the Dunedin and Christchurch directors. The _ retiring auditors were re-elected. The dividend is payable to-morrow. In the Kurunui Hill a gold-carrying leader was cut into at 640 feet, in rich patches. The leader is a small one. In the Long Drive ground shares rose to 50s, but fell to 30s. Wellington, April 9. The outward San Francisco mail consisted of 3130 letters, 2060 newspapers, and 88 hook packets. The '£loo,ooo that was voted by the late Provincial Council to assist in forming a breakwater here, was on Saturday last paid into the Bank of New Zealand, Timaru, to the credit of the Harbor Board. The Napier Harbour Board. (From a correspondent of the Press .) Napier, April 9. It is said that the Hon. R. Stokes contemplates visiting England before next session. Broughton, formerly of Wellington, latterly clerk in the municipal office, was arrested today on a charge of embezzling £47 from Pascoc and Co, brewers, Wellington, when in their employ at Wellington. Ho was remanded to the latter place. When arrested, he expressed no surprise, and evidently was in expectation of the arrest. The natives are discussing the propriety of opening more Good Templar lodges, owing to the great increase of drunkenness among those Hauhaus near public-houses. It is feared that the harbor works will not be a success. The only benefit gained so far is that the bar is being removed further into the bay, while the rush of water is now so •■■rcat that it is almost impossible for vessels To come in while the tide is going out. Practical men say that the works will do more harm than good, and that £75,000 is thrown into the sea. The Governor's Trip South. (From a corresoondent of the Press.) Dunedin, April 9. The Sfnr says the Governor will probably visit Dunedin within a fortnight.

Rut for touching on Shag reef, the run of the Taranaki from the North would have been an exceedingly good one, the time from Manukau to Dunedin being 3 days 23 hours. Excepting the points of two of the blades of the propeller being broken, not the slightest damage is perceptible.
