MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, March 28. (Before G. L. Liee, Esq, and Dr Deamer, J.P.’s.) Drunkenness. —Three inebriates who appeared for the first time were each fined 5a ; Ellen Talbot, who had been repeatedly before the Court, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labor. Drunk and Using Obscene Language.— Annie Osborne, an old offender, who had appeared in Court the previous day for a similar offence, was fined £lO, or in default one month’s imprisonment with hard labor. Drunk and Illegally on Premises.— George Williams, charged with being found illegally on Messrs King and Go’s premises, Cashel street, was fined 10s. Embezzlement. Edwin Wadman was brought up, charged with having embezzled moneys belonging to the Heathcote Road Board. Mr Joynt appeared for the accused. On the application of the police, the case was remanded until the 29th instant, as the Crown prosecutor was unable to attend. Vagrancy. —Mary Taylor was charged, on remand, with having obtained subscriptions under the pretence of their being for a poor widow 7 with a family. The Rev J. Crump called, stated that accused came to his place on the 12th instant, and asked for assistance for a widow named Brown, living at Addington, whose husband had died through an injury received at the railway. He did not give her anything, and learnt subsequently that she had been using his name while collecting subscriptions from Mrs Robinson. Mrs Hawker and Mrs Florance, residing in the Caledonian road, gave evidence of accused asking them for subscriptions for a widow named Robinson. They gave her 2s 6d and 5s respectively. Sergeant Colman stated that he bad been all round St Alban’s and Addington, and could not find any widow of the name of Robinson or Brown. In reply to the Bench, accused admitted the offence, and was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labor. LYTTELTON. Wednesday, March 28. {Before W. Donald. Esq., R.M.) Lunacy from Drink. —Benjamin Clark was brought up, on remand, charged with this offence. Mr Phillips, chief gaoler, stated that the accused had quite recovered. The Bench inflicted a fine of 20s, or, in default, forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. Drunkenness.— Jane Rhodes, charged by Sergeant-major O’Grady with this offence, was fined ss, or, in default, forty-eight hours’. Extension of License.— Mr S. Neale, licensee of the Ocean View Hotel, applied for an extension of his license upon the occasion of a ball on Easter Monday, which was granted.
