SUSPECTED MURDER.
[By Telegraph ] Invercargill, March 20
A man named John Monaghan was brought up at the Magistrates’ Court this morning, charged with the wilful murder of Thomas Casserley, who has a married sister residing at Milton. The men had come to town to keep St Patrick’s day, and both stayed at the Hibernian Hotel on bunday night. On Monday morning Monaghan entered Oasserley’s room and wsntod to see out” an unsettled dispute. This was smoothed over at the time, and the parties went to the bar, where each had four glasses of brandy. Both seem to have gone to bed then, overcome with drink, and some time afterwards Casserley was found lying on the floor with a cut on the back of his head, and blood sprinkled about the floor and walls, Medical assistance was procured after considerable delay. Casserley then complained of extreme pain, and when relief was administered there was an issue of pure blood. He was then removed to the hospital, where, on being told there was no chance of recovery he said, “Jack Monaghan killed me. He died this morning. The prisoner was remanded till after the inquest.
