MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, March 17. (Before G. L. Hellish, Esq., 11. M., and R. Wpsteura, jun, Esq, J.P.) Ehkezzlehrht. —\Y, J. Jacobson was charged with having embezzled the sum of £s'l on 38th February last, belonging to the Colonial Bank. Mr Joynt appeared to prosecute. Detective Walker called, gave evidence of having arrested accused the previous day. Told witness at the time that it was an unfortunate affair, and if the bank had paid him money owing he could have made up the amount and paid it into Mr Redpath's account. He hoped Mr Red path would not be at the loss of the money. He had been pressed by creditors, and had got himself into that trouble to satisfy them. J. A. Redpath called, stated that he was a customer of the Colonial Bank. On the 28th February last lie paid in £37 to his credit. Paid the money to Mr Jacobson in the Bank. G. A. Birch, accountant at the Colonial Bank, called, stated that on the

28th of last month accused was in the employ of the bank as teller 1 His duty would be to receive moneys from the deposit book and make an entry of them i-. the toller’s cash-book. Produced this book kept by accused, and could not find any entry on that day of £37 being paid in. This amount, paid in by Mr Redpath, had not been placed to that person’s credit, nor could any trace of the payment be found iu the bank. Mr Joynt put in a letter addressed by accused to Mr Redpath, making some admission with reference to the money. Defence was reserved, and accused was committed for trial. The Bench fixed bail in two sureties of £IOO each.
