There was little work done at Forbury this morning. Steady rain commenced to fall soon after six o’clock, and continued till past eight; consequently those horses that were out speedily returned to their stables King Philip, Cloth of Gold, and Dead Heat were, however, out early enough to do a good gallop, the three going together on the course outside the hurdles, Logan’s pair were stripped, Waddell riding the chesnut and Allen the colt, while King Philip, as usual, had Jones up. All got away well, and kept together for a mile, when Yeend’s horse commenced to fall back, but Jones shaking the whip at him King Philip overhauled Cloth of Gold at a mile and a half and had him beaten before reaching the straight. Then going in chtse of Dead Beat, who was going in his usual determined style but well within himself, the pair passed the stand together, but Dead Heat had a good deal the best of it, having great advantage in the weights. King Philip, in his turn, was some pounds better off than Cloth of Gold, Lynch brought oat Stormbird, Spray, Nelly King and Merrybird, but had barely time to give them a canter before the rain drove him home again. Monaghan had his four, Templeton, Elfin King, Titania, and Pungawerewere, and these also did nothing worth speaking of. The only other horses on the ground were Fishhook and Eclipse who went a mile on the course in clothing, spurting at the finish. Right Bower is reported to have gone lame yesterday, but as Smith’s team were not out this morning I could not find out if the rumor is correct. Hippocampus took a turn on the beach in light clothing, going about a mile and a half. Rapid progress is being made with the grand stand, workmen being now busy with the roof. The lawn is sloped down and ready for turf, and the picket fencing is also nearly completed, so that in all probability everything will be in order by Thursday week.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Dunedin, Wednesday.

Some good work was done at Forbury today. Titania and Templeton did a rattling two mile gallop, doing the second mile in 2min 12sec, or 2sec quicker than King Phillip and Dead Heat yesterday. Elfin King and Punga did not do such fast work. Hippocampus at last appeared on the course, doing a mile in 2min 15sec. The course will be open to-morrow and Friday, for the last time.
