Stealing From a Dwelling. —Richard Coleman, arrested on the charge of stealing a coat from the Cavershara Hotel, was remanded until Monday, on the application of the police, to enable the prosecutor, who had left town, to be communicated with. Larceny. —Minnie Green, a little girl nearly eleven years of age, was charged with having stolen a smoothing iron and some towels, belonging to Joseph Swindle. The girl had been in prosecutor’s employ for about a month as nurse girl, and in the absence of her mistress the previous day she ran away, taking her own clothes and also the above articles. The girl’s stepmother, who was in court, said she had given her father a great deal of trouble, and would neither remain at school nor in any situation in which she was placed. Her father would like to have her sent to the Industrial School for twelve months. Inspector Buckley told the Bench that the girl was known to be very disobedient. Ordered to be sent to the Industrial School for two years, to be brought up in the teaching of the Church of England. LYTTELTON. Friday, March 9. [Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M., and J. T. Rouse, Esq., J.P.] Drunkenness. —John Barnes, arrested by Constable Moutray, was fined 10s, or, in default, forty-eight hours’ imprisonment, with hard labour, for the above offence. Creating a Disturbance and Obstructing the Police. —Alexander Macarthy, arrested by Constable Moutray, charged with the above offence, was discharged.
