The English cricketers reached Port Chalmers ac 1.30 this morning, and arrived at Dunedin by the hrst train. They were driven to the ground at noon by Mr ChapJin's four-in-hand. Play commenced at one. The weather is dull, but threatening. Fred. Russell, umpire for Otago; Shaw for England. Lathbury won the toss, and sent the Otago men in. Meares aud Cargill were the first to go in, Southerton and Hill bowling The position of the field is— Jupp, wicket-keeper; Lilly white, long-slip; Southerton, bowler and short slip ; Armitage, straight hit and long stop ; Ulyett, square leg; Hill, long slip and bowler; Pooley, short leg ; Ernmett, point; Greenwood, long on; Charl wood, mid off; Selby, cover point. Southerton delivered the first over, taking Meares' centre stump with his third ball—l -0 —0. Eainnowcommenced to fall. Mi sliegtou filled the vacancy, and two byes were inn. Hill delivered a maiden, a bye being run. Southc-rton a maiden. Millington played too late to one of Mill's shooters. 3-0-2. Cargill received a maideD from Southerton, playing with great caution. Dixon took the over from Hill, aud Southerton's third ball Cargill cut for 3. "ill delivered his fourth maiden. Dixon drove Southerton for a single, treatiog Hill similarly, and skving Southerton for a couple. 10 up. Hill now disposed of Cargill—lo—3—3. Hill's average now stood, two wickets for a single. Fulton joined Dixon, and a couple of maidens from each bowler followed. Fulton then broke the ice by obtaining a single off Hill, and then cut Southerton into the reporter.-}' tent for 3. Dixon then cut Southerton for a single, and Hill followed with a maiden. la trying a short run off Southerton, Fulton lost bis wicket—ls—4. 4. Morrison, the in-epmer, lifted Southerton to the fence for 3, and also Hill for a couple. Dixon drove Southerton along the carpet for 3, and aft3r another maiden from Hill, the adjournment made for lucch. The ground is very dead. The present score is :
