Road Roller —lt is expected that the i 6 ton road roller, ordered from England, will be to hand in a few days.

Swimming Races —The swimming races in connection with the O.R.C. will take place this evening. There are a fair number of entries, and a close competition is expected for the various events.

Shipment op Sheep. —The s.s. Star of the South took aboard 250 Merino rams yesterday, and sailed for Napier, These sheep are from Waimate, being the property of Mr Studholme, and destined for his new run at Hawke’s Bay. Property Sale.— Mr Clark held a sale of property at his rooms yesterday. Three building sections on the Whately road w re. sold at remunerative prices, also two building sites in Salisbury street near the Whately road also at good prices. The Club Hotel, Rangiora, now occupied by Mr Roberts, and under lease for seven years to run, was sold for £I9OO.

The City Gas Lamps.— Cr Ick referred yesterday to the custom that obtains here of putting out the city lamps about midnight, or about the time as he justly observed when their protection is most required by the citizens. It was decided by the Council to refer this matter, and a letter from the Gas Company, to the lighting committee. Endowment for the City —A favorable reply has been received from the Colonial Secretary ro an application from the City Council for 2000 acres of rural land, as an endowment in aid of the city funds. The land is to be selected within the prov ncial district of Canterbury, and at yesterday’s Bitting a committee was appointed to make the selection, and authorised to call in the aid of experts if found necessary, City Assessment.— On the motion of Or Hobbs yesterday, the town clerk was instructed to obtain a list from the city valuers of the objections which they are pre pared to allow, so that these may be advertised. This course will save the time of the objectors, who would otherwise have been compelled to attend the Assessment Court during what is expected to be a protiacted sitting.

Co -Operative Society.— A. largo meeting was held last night at the Oddfellows’ Hal), of those interested in forming a Cooperative Society for the supply of all dercriptions of domestic articles. After passing several resolutions the meeting was adjourned until Monday next. The time and place of meeting will be duly advertised. We are given to understand upwards of 300 householders have signified their intention of joining the society. Cricket. —The match arranged for Saturday next to be played on Hagley Paik is England v The Colonies, The following are the teams. England—Messrs Alpe, Ashby, Ooife, Moore, H, W., Neiison, Reeder, Stevens, Sweet, Secretan, Sampson, and A, 0. Wilson, Colonies—B. Cotterill, D’Emden, Dickenson, Fowler, E,, Frith, C, Frith, W., Fairhurst, Fuller, Moore, T. R, Ollivier, Watson and Wood. Play is to commence at 2 30 p.m. sharp.

The Moa Again. —The FoxhiU correspondent of the Nelson Mail writes : '■ Messrs Jessop and Oropp, when looking after land last week between Ben Nevis and Gordon’s Nob, saw footprints which they presume to be thoso of a moa. They were 7in across in the hard ground, and in the soft ground the prints of three claws were noticed, the points of the side ones being 15in apart. It wag heard at night when it was too dark to see anything, and the dogs on hearing it ran into the tent each night in a fright. A search party is starting. It was heard about the tent for five nights.”

Fine Aets. —Mr Charles Clark sold the collection of pictures referred to by us a few days back at his rooms yesterday, when there was a very good attendance. The pictures by Mr Gully sold at from £4 10s to £8; two of Mr Chevalier's brought £l4 10s each; one of De Wiijt’s, “ On the Thames,” £44 ; a coast scene by Francois Musin, brought £45; two of Danby’s brought £l2 and £ls respectively; a portrait by Thomas Matin brought £ls; two sketches by Grunton Spooner sold for £6 and £ll 10s; two pictures by Mr Peele brought £4 and £7 respectively. Altogether the sale was a satisfactory one. Several were bought in, and are now on view at Mr Clark’s rooms. Kaiapoi Begatta Committee.— This committee met at the Borough Council Chamber on Wednesday evening. Present— Dr Dudley, commodore, in the chair, Messrs Oram, Smith, Kerr, Mathews, Dawson, Balch, Sims, and Brooke (hon sec). It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Kerr, seconded by Mr Oram—“ That the conditions in the four-oared sweepstakes race, prohibiting competitors in it from entering in any other race, be struck oat,” It was decided that this race should bsopep to members of crews who are not entered for competition in the champion four-oared race, It was decided to excise the swimming races from the programme, sffd walking the greasy bowsprit, two everts, were inserted. Borough Inspector,—Mr Frank Hobbs was chosen yesterday for the office of Borough Inspector, out of forty-one applications sent in.

Ratepayers’ Reform Association.— At the committee meeting last night the following bu-iness was done. Resolved—--11 That the time has now come when our canal reserve should be used for the purpose originally intended.” “That a dock of twenty acres should be formed along the east belt at the end of the canal,” “That the material from the canal and dock should housed to reclaim the estuary.” “That j* channel should bo dredged in the line of the Hestbcote channel to the Sumner rock.” " That a permanent deep water sea-opening should be blasted in the said rock,” "That a petition should be made to reserve the estuary as an endowment for a dock, canal, and Drainage Board.” Resolved that the following letter shall be sent to the Drainage Board:—‘The chairman and members of the Drainage Board.—Gentlemen, —With a wish to assist you in the proper drainage of this district, we beg to suggest that the following modified scheme of drainage be submitted by you [to public approval after estimates have been duly prepared. The pan system and earth for solid excreta. The slops and storm water to be taken in concrete channels as far as possible, and then main sewers—one commencing about the south east corner of the city, one commencing about the north-east corner of the city—shall run towards and join into the last reach of the above-named canal. The sewage to be discharged twice daily on to the ebb tide as per rough plan herewith, A civil engineer is prepared tr make ths plana and esumatesof alltheabove workforiilOO, and we beg you will inform us if you will vote that money, and have the work done, in order that the said estimates may be submitted to a public meeting, to be called to discuss these matters.
