NEWS OF THE DAY.

The San Francisco Mail.— The Zealandia, with the San Francisco mail, arrived at. Auckland yesterday.

No B Building and Land Society (Permanent) —The third annual meeting of shareholders will be held at the Odd fellows’ Hall to morrow evening at half past seven, to receive report and balance sheet and elect four members of the committee, Lyttelton Water Supply.— The Lyttelton portion of the work was commenced yesterday, with laying down the main pipe along Norwich Quay. As there ore a good many men at the work it will probably be completed, as far as laying the pipes are concerned, in six or seven weeks. Wo commend tue action of the Council in losing r.o time over the work as a full supply of water would be invaluable to Lyttelton at this most unhealthy season of the year.

Fire Brigade.—The committee of the Christchurch Fire Brigade met last evening and made final arrangements for the annual picnic to Governor’s Bay on Friday nest. The following letter was read from Mr E. B. Bishop :—“ Mr'W. Harris. Sir—l beg to convey my best thanks to the Fire Brigade for their smart and effective services at the fire this morning. Please to apply the enclosed cheque, £5 ss, in such manner in connection with the Brigade you may think proper. Yours truly—B. B. BISHOP, Feb. 22nd."

Fire.—At a late hour on Saturday night a fire broke out in a stable, the property of Mr Thomas Lemon, who resides within a short distance of Laghmor station, Ashburton. The stable contained 150 bushels of oats in bags, a largo quantity of corn sacks, and the whole of the harness belonging to his teams, all of wh'ch were consumed. Two valuable horses were in the building at the time of the fire, one of which was burnt to death, and the other was rescued in such a condition that its recovery is doubtful. There are circumstances connected with the case of a very suspicious character, which leads Mr Lemon to think that the fire was not the result of an accident, West Oxford School Committee.—A meeting was held in the West Oxford school on Thursday night, the 22nd instant, for the purpose of electing two members in the place of Messrs Porteus and Youngman, who had forfeited their seats from non-attendance. Mr John Mullins, chairman of the committee, occupied the chair. The chairman read the advertisement notifying the meeting, and explained the necessary provisions under the Ecj.Hation of Elections Act. Mr Simmonds proposed, and Mr Wilcox seconded, Mr John Pawsou as a member. Mr Pawsou proposed, and Mr Bryant seconded, Mr John Himmucds as a member. Mr McKenzie proposed, uud Mr Harry Marsh seconded, Mr B. J. Garamau as a member. A show of hands being taken, the following result was declared ;—Mr Pawson, 8; Mr Simmonds, 6; Mr Gamman, 5, Mr David Fisher entered the room during the show of hands, and expressed himself as anxious to nominate a candidate, but was ruled out of order, and the chairman declared Messrs Pawson and Simmonds duly elected, and as under the Regulation of Elections six householders were required to demand a poll, and as that number did not deem the extra trouble worth whije, the two highest were therefore declared elected.
