HURUNUI RAGES.
Friday, February 23.
Stewards—Sir J. Oracroft Wilson, J. W, Mallock, H. P. Lance, G W. Mcßae, W, 0. Rutherford, VV. Thomson. These races took place yesterday, and if the weather bad been favorable would have been ranch enjoyed by those present. Unfortunately shortly after the first race a strong nor’-west wind set in, which raised raised clouds of dust and rendered it almost impossible to see much of the few last races till the horses were close at home. The fields for the different events were good, and some of the horsesiwere of a fair class, particularly old Manuka who won his race very easily indeed. The stewards were indefatigable in their endeavours to please everbody, and on Messrs G. M'Bae and Rutherford devolved the most onerous part of the work. Sir Cracroft Wilson as usual officiated as judge, and Mr Hurse wielded the starter’s flag efficiently. Lizzie Stofel fell at the first hurdle, and took no further part in the race. A protest was entered by the rider of Lunatic against Satan for having won £2O or more public money, but was not decided when we left the course, but we think there was little probability of it being entertained.
