MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, February 24. (Before H. P. Murray-Aynsley and A. Lean, Esqs., J.P.’s.) Drunk and Disorderly. For being drunk and assaulting the arresting Constable, William Meiklelram was lined 10s. An inebriate, who appeared for the first time, was fined os. George Olsen was fined 1 Os, and Is cab hire. Affiliation.— A case against William Axeikleham. charged with refusing to support his illegitimate elrild, of whom Annie Craig is i ho mother, was adjourned until Monday. Lnckn diarism. —Thomas King was charge d on warrant with having set fire to stables in Armagh street, the property of Mr E. B. Bishop. Inspector Feast applied for a remand, as accused had only been arrested the previous evening. In reply to the Bench, accused said ho had not set lire to the building wilfully. Remanded until AT unlay next. V iolk.nt Assault. —John Gosling was charged with having assaulted J, Johnston at Prebbleton, causing grevious bodily harm. Fred. Redden called stated that accused and the prosecutor were working with witness the previous day at a threshing machine on Mr Beaumont’s farm. Accused and Johnston had some words about a sheaf which was thrown short by Gosling. He (Gosling) then came on to the machine, and during a struggle threw Johnston down. His (Johnston’s) leg caught in the drum and be called out my leg is olf. The man was afterwards brought in to the Hospital. Inspector Buckley told the Bench that the man’s leg had been amputated since, and lie would ask for a remand. Remanded until 2nd March. Stealing from the Person, —ffm. Smith was charged with having stolen a watch from Walter Palmer. When arrested by DetecKirby in High street the watch was found on aim, aud he first said he had purchased it ai Wellington, and afterwards at Melbourne. The prosecutor, called, stated that about 6 o’clock on the 22nd instant he went into the Cavarsham Hotel, and had a wafeh in his vest pocket, secured by a piece of string. Witness had a few drinks, and afterwards went to sleep. He was awakaned at 11 o’clock by the landlord, and went outside. Un getting out, witness put his hand into his pocket to see the time, and found the watch was gone. The button-hole of his vest had been cut. The watch produced war the one he lost, and was purchased by him about seven mouths ago for £4 10s. Detective Kirby stated that he saw tire last witness asleep in the oar of the Caversham that night, and accused was present at the time, Sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labor.
Threatening his Wife. —James Camp. bd l was charged, oa summons, with having threatened the life of his wife, on the 20th iasiant. Mr Thomas appeared fur defendant. Complainant stated that, on chat date, her husband came home he caught hold of her by the shoulder and turned her on'
oul. He also threatened he would do away with her, and had repeatedly threatened to take her life. In cross-examination, the witness said she was sober at the time. She had. been to town, but had only had one glass ! f vine. Witnesshad sent the children forsomo brandy on one occasion. Her husband had often accused her of drinking. She was afraid of her life, but would undertake not to send for any more brandy if her husband would not row with her. Witness had not returned home since that night, and her children had left the house and gone to her. The Bench adjourned the case until Monday, to see if the parties could not come to some arrangement. LYTTELTON. Saturday, February 21. (Before W. Donald, Esq, 11. M.) Drunkenness, —Charles Brown was charged, by Constable Johnstone, with this ofit nee, and lined 10s, or forty-eight hours' hard labour.
