Volunteer Farad b. —The head quarters companies paraded last evening at the Drill Shed for fheir monthly battalion drill, and on this occasion blank cartridge exercise. Alter being placed in position, Major Lean, the officer in command, gave the order of march, when a movement was made, with the Cavalry band preceding, for Hagley Park by the Pvpanui 1o: cl, the Christchurch b tlery leading the battalion with their two Aitnsuong guns. Arrived at, the Park, ‘he men were placed in skirmishing order fir.-og in extension, and the order being given to retire were covered in the retreat by the Artillery, who fired a number of rounds from the if gum. The Infantry having b; eu formed into companies, were afterwards exercised in volley and file firing On rotn ’ning to ir.e Drill Shed the various companies were dismissed on their own parade grounds. Accident —A young man named James Johnston, who had been working at a threshing machine belonging to Mr Bowman, of Prcbbletoa, was received into the hospital yesterday with his right leg macerated from the knee joint down, It seems that he was standing on a portion of the machine cutting bands before they were sent to the man who was feeding the machine. A man named John Gosling was pitching the sheaves from the stack to Johnston, and having thrown one the wrong way Johnston threw it back, when some words followed and Gosling threw him into the drum, where his foot caught, aud before he could be drawn out his leg was crushed. Shortly aft. v arrival at the hospital the leg was amputated about two inches above the koe-. At a late hour last night Johnston was doing pretty well. Gosling, who was arrested subsequently, will be brought up rids morning,

Ratepayers’ Association. —A meeting of the committee was held Inst night at Messrs Cuff and Graham’s offices; Mr Wynn Williams in the chair. Mr Williams ex plained tbak a mistake had apparently been made by the Lyttelton Times as to the object?. of the association. That paper, in some remarks a few days ago, had confused this association with a ratepayers’ association, which had been in existence for some time, and which purports to deal with matters of a very different character; but this association was started for the purpose of dealing with the present assessment, and the c-n----sideration of the drainage propositions, and otuer mattes of a like nature affecting the ratepayers of the Christchurch drainage district. Mr Williams said he thought it would be as well to correct the error, by requesting the papers i.o notice it. The committee then proceeded to consider the advisability of calling the members together, with the view of taking some steps as to the assessment, and also as to the purchase of Morten’s b oek.

A letter \ was read from Messrs Hawkins and Co, stating that the rate they would charge for repairs on commission at Naval Point Breakwater, was 15 percent for wo*kg under, ! and iO per cent for works over; declined. Mr | Sawtell moved,and Dr Bouse seconded—“ That , the Bank of New Zealand be the Board’s \ hankers.” Mr Harman moved an amend- 1 ment to the effect that the banks be invited ■ to tender, and whichever bank offers the ! most liberal terms be chosen. Mr Canningham seconded the amendment. It being suggested that the banking account of the Board should be kept in Lyttelcoo, Mr Har-1 man added to his amendment —“ That the .; successful tenderer should undertake to j receive moneys and cash cheques in Lyttelton.” The amendment was further amended j by the addition of the following words:— • “ That each tenderer should state how it is i-roposed to conduct the business of the Board." Mr hawtell withdrew his motion, and the amendment as altered was put and carried; tenders to be sent in by March 9th. Mr Haider was appointed solicitor to the Board. After transacting some other business the Board adjourned. The next meeting will be held in Lyttelton on March 9th.
