THE CITY COUNCIL AND THE ALL ENGLAND MATCH.
To the Editor of the Globe. Sib,—l observe from the notices in the daily papers that the citizens have responded very promptly to the Mayor’s request (as proposed by Cr Hobbs, and seconded by (Jr Thomson, on Monday last) to close their places of business at X p.tn on the days of the All England Cricket Match. I now learn however with much ‘surprise that of all other places in the city, the Council offices are to be kept open as usual on Monday, and the ordinary sitting of that body will be held at 4 p.m, or at about the most interesting portion of the game. I can quite understand that, considering the present disturbed aspect of European affairs, and Bussia’s well-known desire to swoop down upon some of the colonies after the first intimation of war, how serious the result might be if it were flashed to Bismarck, “ Internal disturbances at Christchurch, City Council didn’t meet 1” Bis. would of course give Russia the wink, Nicholas would immediately reply, “ I has your manly eye, cruisers round,” and where wculd'we be then? Of course there’s the other side too : if only as an act of courtesy to our English visitors, the opportunity should not be lost of giving them a specimen of real native, but un-tatooed oratory to show to their wondering friends at home. Under all the circumstances perhaps it ia better that the meeting should bo held, as to have to bottle up a few more days after the usual fortnight might lose us the valuable services of one or two memboiQ,but I will say after all there’s nothing like the force of example— 11 Don’t do as I do, but do as 1 tell you.” Yours, &.c, ' A. SPLODGE, Christchurch, Feb 23rd.
