THE ALL ENGLAND ELEVEN V WESTLAND. [By Telegraph.] (Per Press Agency.'') The All-England match commenced today. Thera was splendid weather, but a small attendance. Westland won the toss and sent the Eleven to the wickets, Chariwood and Jupp opening the game. The twenty-two were arranged very skilfully, and throughout the day displayed admirable fielding. It may be safely said that, in almost no instance, did the Eleven obtain runs through the fault of the Twenty-two, That the bowling was of far more than average merit, it may bo seen from the small number cf byes, and from the many single runs which made up so large a portion of the score. Pearce “at point, and Guinness at longstop, particularly distinguished themselves, The first over was bowled by Perkins, and resulted in one byo being scored. McGregor took the next over and three singles were made Till the ninth over, when Jupp struck a ball, which was cleverly caught by McGregor, who was wicket keeping, only ondouble had been secured, First man out for 4_lotal 14. Ulyett now took the bat and, with Oharlwood, showed some nice play. Oharlwood, however, drove a ball from McGregor back into his hands, and McGregor held it fast —total 28. Greenwood now faced the bowler and made several singles, Ulyett also helping to increase the score. The latter gave a chance to Daw, but it was not accepted, and the next hit he made Ulyett showed his appreciation of the favor by scoring 4. Soon after he was bowled by McGregor, the ball having first Btmok him

on the arm—three for 44. Selby succeeded, and the score straiily but slowly increased. Greenwood was now given out leg before wicket, to the bowling of McGregor. His score consisted cf singles (one being from an overthrow), with the exception of one double —fourth man out, total 47, Shaw followed, and with Selby rapidly put together singles and doubles, with one treble. Selby was run out—score 63. Emmett next appeared, but after letting his bat slip from bis hands had no opportunity of otherwise distinguishing himself ; he was bowled by McGregor; the score 67. Armitage now took the bat, and played a brilliant yet careful innings, Shaw played the ball on to his own wickets —total 95. Hill rest went in, but after scoring three singles succumbed to the left hand bowling of Morse—total 102. Lillywhite, in like manner, was quickly disposed of by Morse, after having added only two singles to the snore—total 108. Southertoa was the last man to go in, and had scored four singles when the innings was terminated by Armitsge being caught by Guinness, Total score, 119, Play had continued, with the accustomed hour’s intermission for lunch, from one o’clock till a quarter to five. As there was still some time left before the stumps would be drawn, the Twenty-two sent in Barnett and Pearce. Of these the first was bowled by Southerton’s first ball, and the second was caught by Ulyett off Southerton’s bowling, without scoring.
