NEWS OF THE DAY.
Political,— Mr E, 0, J. Stevens invites the electors of Christchurch to meet him at the Oddfellows’ Hall on Tuesday evening next at half-past seven. The Eastern Question. The peace negotiations between the Porte and Servia, which were broken off a few days ago, have been resumed.
Cricket.— The match All-England Eleven v Nelson was commenced at Nelson yesterday. The Englishmen went lo the wickets and when slumps were drawn at six o'clock the score was 142 with one wicket down.
Board of Education]— The Board held a meeting yesterday at the Normal School, when a great deal of business was got through. There was not much of public interest, the main portion of the work being routine.
Phillipstown.—We understand that an application will shortly be made to the licensing bench for the' necessary permission to open a pablic house in this district, but energetic steps are, we hear, being taken to petition against the granting of the proposed license.
The Drainage Question.—l he public meeting convened by his Worship the Mayor, in compliance with a requisition numerously signed, will take place at the Oddfellows’ Hall this evening. That "convened by the chairman of the Heathcote Road Board on the same question will be* held tomorrow evening at the Oddfellows’ Hall, Woolston, 10.0. P., M.U.—The usual fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Perseverance Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., was held last evening in the Hall, Woolston. The district officers, and the officers of the Christchurch Lodges, the Star of Waltham, and Loyal Kaiapoi Lodges, were also present by invitation to meet the members of the Loyal City of Norwich Lodge, Lyttelton. A number of the Lyttelton brethren were present, amongst them being the officers of the South Canterbury District. The North Canterbury District was represented by P,G,M. Wright and D.P.G.M. Cameron. The Lodge having been duly opened, the members of the Lyttelton Lodge were received with due honours. After the usual Lodge business had been disposed of, several toasts were given and responded to, Bro Coles serving up a capital spread. In replying to the toast of the District Officers, Prov G.M. Wright took the opportunity to refer to the idea which had been mooted of a junction of the two Districts, North and South, into one. Three cheers were given for the Lyttelton brethren, who then left per special train. .; •, .
Heathcote Sunday School Treat.— The annual treat to the scholars attending St John’s and St Mary’s Sunday schools was held yesterday. It was originally fixed for the previous Tuesday, bat on account of the wet had to be twice postponed. For this, however, the glorious weather on Tuesday last made ample amends. The youngsters mustered at about eight o’clock, and under the charge of their teachers proceeded by the train, the Valley children getting in at the Valley station, and the Ferry road children at Opawa. The St John’s contin* gent were taken in drays, kindly lent by Messrs Stucky, Thorne, Hawker, Pepperill, and others. The children from the two schools numbered 180 teachers, and friends swelling the total to upwards of 250. The treat was held in a paddock at Bangiora, kindly lent for the occasion by Mr Blackett, who also provided the hot water for the tea, and lent water jugs and other necessaries. Lunch was held? on arrival at the ground, and then sports followed, a great number of prizes having been provided. Cricket, rounders, and other games filled up the day, until tea-time, when all were ready to do justice to the plentiful supply of good things provided. The party returned by the 5.40 train. The Rev Mr Merton and Messrs Martin, Weir, Stucky, Bamford, Papperill, Davis, and other gentlemen, were most indefatigable in carrying out the sports and amusing the children ; as also were Mrs Stucky, Merton, Garland, and Misses Mars* den, Davis, Calvert, and other ladies.
