WELLINGTON JOCKEY CLUB RACES. ['Ey Telegraph] {From a correspondent of the Press.) First Day—Friday, February 9th. President, Hon W. Fitzherbert, M.H.E, ; vice-president, Geo Hunte*, Esq, M.H.R,; judge, E. Pearce, Esq, M.H.B. ; stewards, Messrs Geo Crawford, J.P. ; J. M'Dowell, Joseph Paul, A. Braithwaite, Dr Diver, J. Martin, and J. S. M. Thompson ; starter, Mr Andrew Young ; hon treasurer, Mr J. R. George; clerk of the scales, Mr W. Bromley ; clerk of the course, Mr James
Prosser. These races came off on the course at the Hutt. Notwithstanding the heavy rain for the last few days the course was in fair condition, but the attendance was but moderate. The first event on the programme was the Hurdle race. The local talent seemed to fancy Blue Jacket. St Alban’s won it after all, but with very little to spare. In the Maiden Plate the pot boiled over, nothing but Stirabout and Lady Mary being fancied, Ladyof the Lake however, made her own running, and won it all the way. The Flying Stakes was a capital race between the first three, The Derby was, of course, a walk over for Bay’s declaration. The Provincial Plate brought six starters to the post, and old Tam, who looked very well, was made first favorite. Flora McDonald was pretty freely supported, and Elsa had a few friends, who had seen her perform at Bangitiki. The race was very similar to the Maidens, for the winner made all her own running from the jump, and won pretty easily at the finish. Appended is a detailed account of the racing :
Hurdle Race of 50sovs ; entrance, 3sovs; two miles, over seven flights of hurdles. Mr D. Frazer’s ch g St Albans, by Mai ton out of Montrose, aged, 9st 131 b (Compion) 1 Mr B. Ray’s b g Tommy Dodd, aged, 9st 131 b (F. Matthews) 2
Mr Victor’s (late Mr Ireland’s) Blue Jacket, Te Whehimarama, and Cloud, all carrying 9st 131 b, also ran. Whalebone and Satellite were scratched. Betting—Even on Tommy Dodd, 4 and 5 to 1 agst the rest. At the fall of the flag Tommy went at once to the front, followed by Blue Jacket and Victor, St Albans and Te Whetn lying back. All got well over the first hurdle, when St Albans came through his horses, and at the turn into the straight the lot closed. Passing the Stand, St Albans was in charge of affairs, Blue Jacket second, and the favorite third, Te Whetu pulling double several lengths behind. St Albans, nailed on by Blue Jacket, increased his lead to the sixth hurdle, where the latter fell, and Tommy, who Matthews was already riding, began to come up before the last hurdle but one. Te Whetu came to the leaders, but rushing the hurdle too fast, fell. From this home St Albans kept the lead, Tommy gradually closing with him, and a capital finish ensued, resulting in favor of St Albans by a short neck.
The Hack Hurdle race produced five entries, and was won easily by McLean’s Straight Tip, the supposed certainty being second.
Maiden Plate, of 100 sovs ; entrance, 5 sovs ; one mile and a ha'f ; for all horses maidens at the time of entering ; weight for age. Mr Gilligan’s Lady of the Lake (by Sledmere) out of Meg Merrilies, 3 yrs, 7st 101 b (Hones) 1 Mr H. Redwood’s ch colt Stirabout, 3 yrs, 7st 131 b ... (Clifford) 2 Mr Rae’s b m Lady Mary, 5 yrs, 9st 61b (Matthews) 3 Mr Frazer’s ch g St Albans, aged, 9st 111 b 0 Betting—6 to 4 on Lady Mary and Stirabout, 3 to I agst Lady of the Lake. After a break away by Lady of the Lake the lot got well away together. Lady of the Lake made the running, followed by Lady Mary and Stirabout. At the back of the course St Albans was disposed of, and Lady Mary was out of it. Before coming to the turn Stirabout made bis effort, just before
the rails, but he never succeeded in getting on terms with the filly, who won comfortably by two lengths. Time—2min 48sec. Flying Stakes Handicap, of 50 sovs; three-quarters of a mile. Mr Bay’s b f Fallacy, by Traducer out or Deception, 3 yrs, 7st 81b ... (Demuth) 1 Mr Redwood’s b h Guy Fawkes, 5 yrs, ftrtlOlb (A, Lyford) 2 Mr Walker’s ch m Glenary, 6 yrs, 7st (J. Walker) 3 Lady of the Lake, 6st 91b ; Morning Star, 4 yrs, 7st*3lb; and Songster, 7st 6ib, also ran. Betting—6 to 4 agst Fallacy and Guy Fawkes, 4to 1 agst the rest. Fallacy made play from the jump, closely attended by Guy and Glenary. To these succeeded Lady of the Lake, Songster, and Morning Star, in the order named before. Before half the distance had been covered it was clear that the issue lay between the first three, and that the rest wore out of the hunt. At the last turn Guy came with a rush, and looked very dangerous, Demuth, however, who rode with great judgment, pulled Fallacy on the outside running, and won eventually by a neck, Guy beating Glenary for second place by about the same distance. The Wellington Derby, of 100 sovs, added to a sweepstake of 10 sovs each ; half forfeit for acceptors ; for three-year-olds; colts, Sat 101 b ; fillies, Sat 51b ; mile and a-half. Mr R. Bay’s b f Fallacy ... (Watty) 1 Mr Ray’s ch c Danebury 2 This was of course virtually a walk over. The Provincial Plate, of 125 sovs; entrance, 5 sovs ; the second horse to receive 25 sovs from stakes ; one mile and a quarter; for all horses owned for six months previous to the race by hona fide settlers of the province of Wellington. Weight for age. Mr Davies’ g m Elsa, by Traducer, out of Troy, 4 yrs, Bst 121 b ... (Belcher) 1 Mr J. Walker’s g m Flora McDonald, 4 yrs, Bst 121 b (Walker) 2 Mr J. Walker’s b m Tambourini, aged, 9st Blb (Raj) 3 Princess Mary, 9at 61b; Yoltarine, Bst 121 b; and Treason, Oat 11b, ran. Betting—6 to 4 agst Tam; 2to 1 agst Flora ; 4 to 1 the rest* When the lot were dismissed, Elsa went at once to the front, followed by Treason and Tam, Flora next,Yoltarine and Princess Mary bringing up the rear. They ran thus to the back of the course, where Treason fell back beaten, and Tam slightly improved his position. He was shortly pressed by Flora, who came with a rush a quarter of a mile from home; Elsa however kept a good lead to the finish, winning easily by a length and a half; Flora second, and the favourite a moderate third. Time, 2m 565, I fancy Guy Fawkes will win the Cup tomorrow, but as the acceptances for the Hurdle race and D.J.O. have not appeared, I cannot offer opinion on them.
