NEWS OF THE DAY.
“Portonians ” Notes. —“ Portonians” notes from Lyttelton are held over till Monday’s issue. Skating Races.—A race for a pair of skates, in continuation of those already decided, will take place this evening at the Skating Rink. The San Francisco Mail. —This mail, consisting of fifteen bags, fourteen from Christchurch and one from Lyttelton, were sent North in the Rotorua, s.s, yesterday.
The All-England Match. —Mr James Lillywhice has telegraphed to the hon. sec. of the match committee, fixing the AllEngland match with Canterbury for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesdry, February the 26th, 2?th, and 28th.
Christchurch Skating Club.—A meeting of the Club was held last evening at the rink. After discussing the advisableness of having a band on club evenings, it was ultimately decided to leave the matter in abeyance for a future meeting. Mdllb Fkanzini.—This lady, who during her last visit here was so successful in her exhibitions of skill on the bicycle, will reappear this evening at the Skating Rink. Her performance is certainly not only novel but astonishing from the ease and grace with which the most difficult feats are performed, Athletic Association. The annual sports of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Assoc’ation, which were fixed for to-day, have been postponed until Saturday next. They will take place on the grounds of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and from the number of entries a very successful meeting is anticipated.
Trinity Congregational Church.— The anniversary sermons in connection with the above Church will be preached tomorrow, by the Rev B. Hills, of New South Wales. The Rev W. J. Habens will preside at the children’s service, to be held at 3 p.m,, and on Tuesday the annual tea meeting will be held at the Oddfellows’ Hall, when addresses will be delivered by the Revs Blmslie, Dallaston, Hills, Hallowes, and other gentlemen, Heathcotb Regatta.—A meeting of the committee took place last night, when the members present gave in the amount of subscriptions promised, which was considered satisfactory. In consequence of not having received an answer from Kaiapoi when the regatta would be held there, it was not thought advisable to fix a date. From the feeling already manifested by the public, it is probable that a sufficient sum of money will be forthcoming for this annual regatta. The meeting then adjourned until Friday evening next, at 8 p.m, when the members of the committee collecting are requested to bring their lists with them. Canoe Race.—A race between Messrs J Perrin and J. Winterbourn took place on the Waimakari on Thursday evening for £5 aside. In a former race the latter was the victor, and in this it was agreed that they should change canoes ; and judging from the fact that the men were equally matched, but that the same canoe came in first in each race, they would, if placed in canoes of equal draught, make an exceedingly close contest. Perrin went away with the lead, and won by several lengths. The course was rough, and a strong current in over the whole distance of three miles. There were over 200 persons on the bridge to witness the race.
Imported Dogs.— -The brigantine Camilla, from Hobart Town, brings some additions to our canine stock. One, a greyhound slut, eighteen months old, is a grand animal, and will no doubt attract much attention. She was got by a dog that took the sixty guinea prize in Sydney as the best bred greyhouad in New South Wales, her mother being an imported bitch belonging to Mr Graves, of Hobart Town. Besides this slut Oupt White baa on board two retriever pups, a pointer, a field spaniel pup, and a greyhound pup, all handsome animals, though rather poor after their trip. Aquatics. — A race was rowed yesterday by two crews from the Electric Telegraph Rowing Club for a set of medals presented by the captain. The two boats used were the Tyne, kindly lent by the Canterbury Rowing Club, and the Electric, the property of the Telegraph Club, The crews of the boats were as follows : —Tyne—H. Day, bow; Collins, 2 ; Guinness, 3 ; Willcox, stroke ; Wilson, cox. Electric Rapley, bow; Houlihan, 2 ; Dawson, 3 ; G. Day, stroke ; Edgar, cox. The race came off Jabout three o’clock, the course being from below the Tannery up to Herdson’s corner ; distance, about one mile. The crews had been in training for some considerable time, and the attendance of interested spectators was numerous. Mr J. W. Mason officiated as starter, and performed his duties with satisfaction. At the given signal the boats got well together on very even terms, but after a short distance the Tyne began to forge ahead, and at the end of the first 500 yards was leading a clear length, with a steady swinging stroke. Q. Day, for the Electric, pulled a very plucky stroke, and was ably supported by his crew. The latter attempted several very exciting spurts, but notwithstanding the winning boat had the race in hand from start to finish, and came in first easily by about two lengths. It is highly creditable on the part of the Telegraphic department that it is enabled to form a dab sufficiently numerous to furnish two picked crews to show as much sport as they did yesterday, and we hope that they may find a crew to occupy a leading position in some of our forthcoming regattas.
The population of Metz before the war was 81,000. At the present there are only 18.000 French there, while the German colony numbers 16,000, and the garrison 15.000. The French inhabitants live among themselves, and the German officers and functionaries complain greatly of their inbospitality,
