G.B.C. JUNIOR FOURS. The Junior Four oar races for Mr Bevan’a prizes wore rowed on Saturday afternoon. Owing to the rain there were very few spectators The course was from Butterfield’s to the corner below (Jowlishaw’s, a little over a mile. Four crews competed, and, with one or two exceptions, the rowing was very fair considering that this was the first time the new sliding seats had been used. The Telegraph Club kindly lent their new four the Electric, sister boat to the Tyne, owned by the Canterbury Club. The first heat did not start until half-past three, owing to the non-appearance of the No 2 of Fook’s crew, until an hour after he, should have turned up. It is to be hoped that such conduct on the part of any memberwill be put a stop to in future. The following are the details of the various heats Junior Four-Oared Race. One mile, Prizes given by Mr Bevans. first heat, Tyne, south bank—(Mathias, bow; Searell, 2 ; Hawkes, 3 ; Fooks, stroke ; Mann, cox) I Electric, south bank—(Farr, bow ; Johnston, 2 ; Tancred, 3 ; Martin, stroke ; McDougall, cox) 2 A even start was made ; Fooks soon showed in irout, and in spice of repeated spurts from Martin, won by a length clear, SECOND heat, Electric, south bank—(J. Grierson, bow ; Callender, 2 ; liule, 3 ; Lean, stroke; Mann, cox) 1 Tyne, north bank —(Stringer, bow ; Tancred, 2 ; 0. Morris, 3 ; Lanauze, stroke; McDougall, cox)... 2 In this heat Tancrcd had to take the place of Bassett at No 2, he being prevented by illness from rowing. Both boats got away well, but Lean drew gradually ahead, and was clear at Pratt’s corner, winning by about two lengths. FINAL HEAT. Electric, south bank—(Grierson, bow ; Callender, 2; Rule, 3; Lean, stroke; Mann, cox) 1 Tyne, north bank (Mathias, bow ; searell, 2 ; Hawkes, 3; Fooks, stroke; McDougall, cox) ... 2 A good start, the boats kept together for a couple of hundred yards, when Lean, rowing a quicker stroke than his opponent, drew ahead and won by three lengths.
