ROAD BOARDS.

HBATHCOTE. This Board met at 10,30 a.m. on Thursday. January 18th. Present—Messrs Manning (chairman), F. Jones, P. Kerr, Wm. Attwood, and Wm Langdown. The minutes of the last meeting were road and confirmed The following correspondence was read—A letter from Mr G. Thornton, Government Engineer, stating the delay on the (Sumner road contract arose from the contractor’s men having left to undertake harvest work, find that the contractor had been requested to piocced with the work. A letter from the clerk to the local Board of Health, enclosing copy of a letter from Mr Shirley Gore, calling attention to the filthy and unwholesome sta e of the drains, or rather cesspools, on the East town belt and Gloucester street east. The local Board of Health to be informed that this matter had been attended to. Letter from Mr G. A. Buck, re Voters’ Electoral Roll for 1877-1878. The foreman o works reported having attended to instructions as to the road at Opawa. The foreman was instructed to attend to ruts on Gasworks road, and place screened shingle where necessary. On the motion of Mr Attwood, seconded by Mr William Langdown, it was resolved —“ That the solicitors to the Board be instructed to call upon the sureties of their late clerk, Edwin Wadman, to make good his defalcations to the extent of their bond.” The following tenders were ac cepted For forming Hills road, near Miss Bkillicorn’s, about twenty chains, Henry Lake, 40s per chain ; forming (St Martin’s road, about forty-five chains, Robert Beattie, 25s per chain (accepted). It was resolved—" That the tender of Henry Lake be accepted for forming the Hills road, and that the tender of Robert Beattie be accepted for forming St Martin’s road, subject to the payment to the Board of the cost of the work by the inhabitants of 8t Martin’s as previously agreed upon.” Accounts were then examined and passed for payment amounting to the sum of £353 10s. It was resolved—" That the members of the Board meet at 10.30 a.m on Tuesday morning next, the 23rd instant , at Christchurch quay, to go over the Heathcote river road from the quay to Opawa road; and afterwards inspect Dyer’s road and other parts of the district.” The Board then adjourned.
