NEWS OF THE DAY.
Sir Julius Yogel,— The New Zealand, Times says:—“A telegram dated London, January 13th, has been received by the Government, from Sir Julius Vogel, as AgentGeneral, officially notifying his arrival.” Unhealthiness of Wellington.— The Times of the 16th has the following with regard to the number of deaths reported by telegram during the past few days:—” If any proof were required to show the unhealthy condition of the city, it is to be found in the fact that during the last sixteen days of January thirty-two deaths have been registered as occurring in Wellington, of which twenty-three have been children under the age of twelve years,” Cricket. —The return match M.C.C.C. v United Bankers, which was arranged to be continued on Saturday next (provided the Interprovincial match is finished on Friday), has been postponed sine die , and the following match substituted: —M.C.C.C. Second Eleven v an Eleven of the U.C C.C. The following will comprise the M.C.C.C. team—viz, Messrs Barringer, Bell, Gray, Hislop, Mclntyre, Palairet, Beeder, H. S. Smith, M. S. Smith, Taylor, and Turner; emergency, McGardell and Hill. Play to commence at 2,30 p.m punctually. East Christchurch School Committee. — A meeting of the ratepayers of the East Christchurch Educational district was held at 7 o’clock last evening. The meeting was convened by the Board of Education, for the election of a member of the school committee in place of the Kev J. W. Habens, resigned, Mr G. L. Lee (under appointment from the Board) acted as chairman. After reading the advertisement convening the meeting, the chairman asked if any ratepayer had a candidate to propose. Mr F. Hobbs said he had great pleasure in proposing Mr E. JO. J. Stevens to fill the vacancy. Mr McDougall seconded the motion, which was unanimously agreed to. Theie being no other nomination, the chairman declared Mr Mevens to be duly elected A vote of thanks was passed to the chairman, who remarked tbit he expected to see a fuller meeting. He was the only member ot the committee who was present. The proceedings then terminated. St Augustine Lodge, E. C.—The brethren of the St Augustine Lodge. 009, 15. C„ celebrated the installation of their officers for the ensuing year by a banquet in the Masonic Hall last evening, when there was .» largo attendance of the craft, including many visilors from sister Lodges. The W.M., Bio Seymour, presided. The banquet, which was provided by Mr Quill, Provincial Larder, was very nicely laid, the tables being decorated with pot plants, &c. After ample justice had been done to the providing the following toasts were duly honored, viz;—“ Tins Queen and the Craft;” “The MW., Hro the Prince of Wales, GM. of England “ The M.W,, the Earl of Carnarvon, Pro G..Vi “ The R W. the Earl of Skelmtdale and the Past and Present Grand Officers;” “The Grand Masters of Scotland and Ireland;” “The E.W. Dist G.M. of Canterbury, Bro W. Donald ;” “ The D. Dist G.M. and Past and Present Officers of the District Grand Lodge;” “ The Sitter Lodges;” “ The W.M. of the St Augustine Lodge ;” “The East and Present Officers of the St Augustine Lodge,” coupled with the name of Bid It, C. Bishop. A number of other toas:s were proposed, and several capital songs sung by Bros F. J, Smith, H. E. Alport, Milsom, H. Thomson, Rich, &c,
Drapers’ and Clothiers’ Association. The adjourned half-yearly meeting of the above association will be held at the Foresters’ Hall, on Tuesday, January 23rd, at 8 p.m. County Council. — The adjourned meeting of the Selwyn County Council was held today in the Provincial Council Chamber. A long debate ensued on Mr Tancred’s motion as to adopting part of the County Act only, and ultimately, after a long debate, in which all the members took part, it was resolved, on the motion of the Hon John Hall, to adjourn until February 23rd. Masonic. —The quarterly communication of the District Grand Lodge of Freemasons, 8.C., was held at the Canterbury Masonic Hall yesterday afternoon, the B,W.D.G.M. Bto W. Donald presiding. A communication was received from the District Grand Secretary of the Auckland Grand Lodge respecting the death of the late B.W.D.G.M. of the North Island Bro Sir Donald McLean. The Grand Lodge passed a vote of sympathy with the brethren in the North Island on the loss the craft had sustained by the death of the E.W. brother. A notification of the resignation of IBro. A. F. N. Blackiston of the office of Disk Grand Secretary held by Pirn for so many years was received. The following brethren were then appointed as officers of the Grand Lodge for the ensuing term, viz : —D.D.Q.M, Bro H. Thomson; D.G.S.W., Bro. W. Deamer ; D.G.J.W., Bro. J, L. Fleming; D.G. Chaplain, Bro. Bev W. H. Cooper ; D.G. Treasurer; Bro J. A. Bird ; D.G. Eegistrar. Bro F. J. Smith ; D.G.S.D., Bro P. Cunningham; D.G.J.D., Bro P. Eentoul; D.G. Sword-bearer, Bro 0. E. Dudley ; D. G. Director of Ceremonies, Bro G. P. Milsom; D.G. Superintendent of Works, Bro E. Anderson; DG. Secretary, Bro B. 0. Bishop ; D.G. Organist, Bro Milner ; D.G. Pursuivant, Bro T. Bush ; D.G. Tyler, Bro Stevens ; D.G. Stewards, Bros H. M'Lellan, Allwright, Williams and W, Clifford. Methodist Free Church Meeting.— The district tea and public meeting in connection with the above was held last evening at the St Asaph street Church. About 250 persona sat down to tea, which was provided by the ladies of the congregation. A fter the tables had been cleared the public meeting was held at which there was a very large attendance. The Rev S. Macfarlane occupied the chair, and in the course of his opening remarks recapitulated the statement of the position of the churches, which was submitted at the first meeting of the District Session now sitting, and has already been published. During the evening the following addresses were delivered by ministers attending the District Session— Bov J. White (Hawke’s Bay), “On Scepticism ” ; Bev M. Bingater, “ Distinctive Features of Free Methodism ” ; Bev H. B. Bedstone (Wellington) “Beligiousßevivals”; Rev R. Taylor (Westport), “ On John Ashworth ” ; Bev J. A. Caygill (Charleston), “ Mission Work in New Zealand.” Mr J. Jebson delivered a very excellent address “ On Personal Responsibility ” ; after which, on the motion of Mr Leadley, hearty votes of thanks were passed to the ladies who had provided and presided over the tea, and to those gentlemen who had addressed the meeting. During the evening a number of hymns were sung by the choir. United Methodist Free Churches.— The sessions of the district meeting yesterday began with devotional exercises ; Mr G. Booth offering prayer. Mr Alfred Peters, recommended for the ministry by the Charleston Church, was unanimously accepted, the report from the district committee, who had examined him and heard him preach, being fully satisfactory. It was decided to give up the Grey Valley circuit. The first draft of stations was then read, upon which there was no discussion. The Bev M. Baxter was elected representative to the annual assembly, England, with Bev E. Boaden alternative representative. At the afternoon session the district missionary committee handed in their report, which was adopted. Receipts for the year, £9l Is lOd. After a vote of thanks to the committee the following brethren were elected for the next year: Treasurer, Bev T. E. Fisher; secretary, Bev T. Hodgson ; committee, | Messrs Booth, Scott, B. Clarkson, Caygill, | Leadley, and Brown. A very satisfactory i report from the examiners of probationers | was read and adopted. The following com- ■ mittee of examiners was elected for next year:—Revs Fisher, Baxter, and Macfarlane, with Rev J. White, secretary, The second draft of stations was read, the discussions to be taken at the next session, that is, this morning.
