THE INTERPROVINCIAL REGATTA.
[by electric telegraph.] (From a corresvondent of the Press.') Second Day. Nelson, January 18. The weather to-day has been_ beautifully fine, with a highly favorable wind for the sailing races. Commodore Cross s cup for the champion four-oar gig race was publicly presented to the crew of the Transit by Miss Cross this afternoon. The same crew pulled in the Dolly Varden to-day, and had the honor of winning the champion outrigger race by about four lengths, the Illyssus being second, and the Wakatu third. The yacht race yesterday was won by Mr R. Richardson’s Nelson boat the Gannet. The Auckland boat Secret was the favorite, and no doubt would have taken the race had she not in the second round grounded on the bar The Gannet in the mean time passed her and obtained too good a lead to bo easily overtaken by the Auckland boat. The Claymore, which had been a long way behind from the start, gave up a hopeless chase, and returned to the harbour after the first time round, |The time occupied by the Gannet was about eight hours. This morning a protest was entered against the Gannet, but the committee deferred their decision till to-night, Four boats started for the Coasters’ Race, but the Arthur Wakefield did not go outside the harbour. The Planet got to sea without difficulty, but the Nelson ard Maid of Italy were nearly taken by the current ou to the Fifeshire Rock at the entrance of the harbour. The Nelson got away with a lead, and maintained it, closely followed by the Planet. The Maid of Italy got out of the tide and remained stationary for some time. Neither of the boats arrived at the winning post till a late hour. The Maid of Italy was the first to make her appearance. Though she claims the race, the committee as yet refuse to award her the prize on the ground that she did not go over the course. The question will b settled to-night. The following are the particulars of today’s racing : First-class Open Boat Sailing race, boats under 24ft on keel ; distance, 5 miles ; Ist prize, £ls ; 2nd, £5 Ada (Nelson) F. Trask ... 1 Electra (Nelson) Thos Astel ... 2 Victoria (Nelson), John Freeman 3 The Telegraph (Nelson) ; James Lupin’s Llewellyn (Picton) ; W. Pugh's the Waterlily (a Greymouth boat) and four others also started, but neither of them showed up at the winning post, the Waterlily coming to grief through smashing her rudder. At halfpast ten the boats were got in position, and on the gun being fired they all got away with a good start and a fresh breeze. The Waterlily was first round the buoy; Llewellyn second, closely followed by the winning boat Ada, and all the others well up. On passing the Government Wharf the first time round, the Waterlily was still leading with the Telegraph second. Shortly after the Greymonth boat met with an accident and had to give up the race. On reaching the winning post, the boats were in the order given above. It was a splendid race all the way through, and as the boats kept pretty close together throughout the race, it had a remarkably pleasing appearance. Scullers’ Dingy race, under 12ft on keel ; distance, 2 miles ; Ist prize, £3 ; 2nd, £l, Spec (Nelson) Taylor 1 Overboard Jack (Nelson) J. Reid 2 These were the only two boats entered. Overboard Jack got away first, and obtained a good lead, while the Spec was catching a series of crabs. The latter, however-, being a much lighter boat, soon picked up Overboard Jack, and won easily. Volunteer Cadet race ; in whaleboats ; five oars ; to be steered by steer oar ; distance two miles ; the whole of each crew to belong to one corps ; Ist prize, £6 ; 2nd, £2. I Echo (Welington Artillery Cadets), ... 1 Cutty Sark (Kelson City Cadets) ... 2 Thistle (Nelson Artillery) 3 The boats got away well together, but the Cutty Sark started very indifferently. The Thistle soon ;got a slight lead, but in rounding the first buoy the Echo was dial! a length ahead, with the Cutty Sark a long way behind. The Echo crew were pulling a splendid stroke and soon gained a lead of several lengths which she maintained till reaching the buoy at the entrance of the harbor. In rounding this point the Cutty Sark drew well upon the leading boats and by a good spurt got on even terms with the Thistle. From this a splendid race between the three boats took place to the Government wharf, the Echo winning by a length ; the Cutty Sark being just half a length ahead of th« Thistle. Champion Four-oared Outrigger race, wither without coxswain ; distance three miles, straight course ; Ist prize, £l5O ; 2nd, £lO. Dolly Varden (Wellington Rowing Club) Hearn, 1 Ist 71b, bow ; McGrath, Bst 111 b. 2 ; Walker, 12st, 3 ; Woods, 12st 21 b, stroke 1 Illyssus (Timaru Rowing Club) P. Westrupp, sst, cox B Valentine (Thames Rowing Club) ... 0 Cam (Kaiapoi Cure Club) 0 Stella (Wellington Star Rowing Club)... 0 The Valentine was the first to catch the wator, and got away with a slight lead, but she was quickly overhauled and passed by the Dolly Varden. Just after starting the Valentine got into the Ilyssus’ water, and got so close as to cause the bow to unship his oar and miss three or four strokes. The latter boat, however, quickly recovered her loss and passed the Valentine, closely followed by the Wakatu. The Dolly Varden crew were pulling splendidly, and kept the lead easily all the way. The Government whaif was passed and the winning post reached in the order 1 have named. At the finish of the race three hearty cheers were given for the Dolly Varden crew, which they richly deserved, as their style of pulling was excellent. The other Wellington boat, the Stella, did nor, reach the winning post, but dropped out of the race at the boat sheds. The Dally Varden won easily by about four lengths. At one time it was so rough that it was feared the race would have to be postponed, but about half-past one the wind lulled, and at two o’clock the water was beautifully smooth, a d everything in favour of the race being j-, wed in good time. The time occupied was 1 jnin. 40aec, but had the winning boat been
hard pressed, it would have been much less, as they were pulling quite an easy stroke at the finish. Second-class Open Boat Sailing race ; under twenty feet on keel ; distance, three miles ; Ist prize, £lO ; 2nd, £2, Waterlily (Greymouth Towing Company) I Telegraph (Nelson), J. Luking 2 Ada (Nelson) D. Gilbertson 3 Victoria (Nelson), E. Everett 0 Red Jacket (Nelson), A. W. Bradley ... 0 Peep o’ Day (Nelson), P. Freeman 0 The Plectra, Star, and Llewellyn, also started.
