COMMERCIAL.

Beyond a few samples of grass seed offered, little else has been done in the grain market during the ■week, farmers being now generally busy getting prepared for harvesting. Notwithstanding the late imports from Adelaide, wheat is still wanted for grinding, and as long prices will doubtless be oflered for the first lots in the market, farmers should use every endeavour to secure an early delivery. Some purchases for delivery within the month are reported at prices withheld, but it is understood extreme value has been given. Oats are quiet, export demand being very limited, the outside markets being apparently overstocked; tor prime samples buyers offer 2s. Barley is in some what better enquiry for malting, but saks are difficult to effect to obtain return of prices paid ; stocks on hand are still heavy, and must largely atleel the value of the growing crop. For grass seed, traders offer 3s 9d to 4s for medium to very clean samples, purchases being readily effected at those figures. Flour is quiet, and is quoted nominally at £l6, but sales have been made at less. Dairy produce, remaius at Bdfor prime butter, and s}d for cheese. Haras and bacon are firm at 91tt in cloth. A moderate amount of business has been transacted In the import markets during the past week. Sugars—A line of 2000 pockets yellow counters and white crystals has been disposed ot at rates with held, but we believe the prices were quite 30s per ton on rates ruling ten days since. Owing to the telegrams and advices from Melbourne received on Thursday, confirming a further rise in sugars at the Mauritius, holders here are now asking fully £3 per ton on our late quotations. We quote the following rates as held for by importers:—Yellow counters, £2B to £3O; yellow crystals, £3l 10s to £33 • white crystals, £34 to £37. We note a cargo is expected shortly from the Mauritius, but those sugars will cost very high, and cannot in any way affect these rates. Teas—We note part of the shipments ex Kassa and Eunice, via Melbourne, arrived per Alhambra and Arawata a few days since. We understand these will be offered to the trade in a day or two. Trade sales have been made in fine Qualities of last reason's growth at is 8d to is 9di.b. Kerosene—The Josephine via Port Chalmes. arrived on the 10th iustaut, bringiiig 1650 cases for this market. The greater portion of this has been sold, as reported by us a few weeks back. We cannot quote a price for ordinary trade-sales, but believe 3s per gallon, d.p, is about the figure Spirits—Hennessy's bulk brandy is quite nominal; case is worth 33s to 345. We hear of 7s 6d and 7s 9d being refused for large lines of good second brands Schnapps (Wolfe's), are in better request at 22s 6d per case for lines. Crushed loaf sugar is quitted at 63s dp An invoice of chairs per Josephine has been sold at rates withheld, but understand the prices obtained were a fair average. Galvanised fron-A little business has been done at £3l for Gospel Oak. Fencing wire—We have no change to report in this line; usual station orders have beeu supplied at full rates. Dried fruits-One or two paxrt is of choice fruits have been disposed of at 5d to s|d d.p. We have nothing new to report in cornsacks or woolpacks.
