NEWS OF THE DAY.
The Rev H. N. Wollaston.—This gentleman, a preacher of some note in Mel* bourne, arrived by the Alhambra yesterday. He will officiate at St John's Church during the absence of the incumbent. The Cardigan Castle.—We publish in our shipping columns a report from the Surgeon-Superintendent, from which it will be seen that one death has occurred. The general health of the immigrants is good however, Board op Education.—A meeting of the Board was held yesterday. The business transacted was mainly of a routine character. The General Government have empowered the secretary to frank letters on the business of the Board, but declined to grant free passes on the railway to the department as requested, Commercial Telegram.— The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company have received the following cablegram from their London office:—" London, January 3rd. —Wool : Market unchanged. Dp to date, 50,400 bales have arrived. Tallow : Market quiet. Wheat : Adelaide is worth 56s per 4961b8 ; New Zealand is worth 545. The weather is favourable for the crops here. Mimosa bark : Market dull ; quotation for Melbourne ground, £ll per ton ; do, chopped, £lO. Copper: Market quiet. Burra is worth £B4 per ton ; Wallaroo, £BS. Tin : Market is irregular ; fine Australian is worth £75 per ton "
Fiee Brigade.—A meeting of the Christchurch Volunteer Fire Brigade was held last evening, when the committee appointed to c*rry ont the torchlight procession handed in thpir report, showing that after paying ail accounts there was a deficiency of £2O lis 6:1. It was unanimously agreed tbat the £2O voted by the City Council for opening the new station, should be appropriated for irakiug up the deficiency, as the members were of opinion that the station was opened by the annual reunion. It was further resolved tnat the public be asked to subscribe to th? future processions. A committre was formed to make arrangements for the anunal picnic, to cake p!*ce in February next, The meeting then terminated.
Ohess Club —A. meeting of gentlemen interested in the formation of a chess club was held last night at Warner's. There was an attendance of nineteen gentlemen. Mr Paul occupied the chair. Mr Jacobsen moved, and Mr McWilliam seconded—- " That the gentlemen present form themselves into a chess club, to be called the Christchurch Chess Club." It was resolved on the motion of Mr Mclntyre, seconded by Mr Bowley—" That an interim committee, consisting of Messrs Colbome-Veel, Jacobsen, McWilliam, H, Day, and Dr Mark be appointed to draw up rules, and make inquiries as to obtaining a club room, &c ; three to form a quorum." It was moved by Da* Mark, seconded by Mr Peez—" Tnat a deputation of ten members of the interim committee be appoiuted to wait upor the Governor), of the College to see if it be possible to get the use of one of the rooms m the Public Library." Present—Messrs Btaploton (in the Jicade ( bon treasurer), Deacon, _ Muschamp, aud W. G. Walker \ao\i tsc), A statement of accounts submitted by the treasurer and audited by \\t J. Ollivier was approved. A general mooting of the society wsb then held, at which there was a large attendance of
members. Mr T. Btapleton waß voted to the ch:iir. After some congratulatory remarks from the chairman on the very satisfactory position of the society, be called upon the secretary, who the ad, interim, report brought up and read at a general meeting held on the let September last, which v--r« npproverl. The treasurer read the annual statement cf accounts, showing the credit account composed of £9O 15s 9d balance from last year and £444 17s 4d rsceipts—to be £535 13s Id, and the expenditure £494 4s 7d, leaving a credit balance in hand of £4llßs 6d. On the motion of Mr Adkin, seconded by Mr Muschamp, the report was adopted. After some discussion as to the sdvisableness of altering the rules to meet the advanced position of the society it was resolved to make an alteration, holding the annual meeting in the month of Augußt in each year, instead of January, as hitherto determined. On the motion of MijWalker, seconded by Mr Porter, a resolution carried, empowering the incoming committee to invest the ownership of the exhibition pens and cages belonging to the society in trustees if deemed advisable. The election of officers for the ensuing year then took place, with the following results : Patron—Mr Geo Gould ; vice-presidents, his Worship the Mayor, Messrs H, Sawtell, J. R. Hill, A. Saunders, and H. Wynn- Williams ; hon treasurer, Mr G. A. Beade ; hon secretary, Mr W. G. Walker ; committee, Messrs G, A. Macquarie, E. R. Deacon, W. H, Porter, G. Muschamp, W. T. C. Mills, 0. Adkin, E. Rees, W. C. Hill, T. Williams, J. Goodman, and 8. Baunders On the motion of Mr Goodman, a vote of thanks was passed to the retiring officers. The meeting then, adjourned.
