The protest of the Wellington lodges against holding the Grand Lodge at Auckland was considered. The committee upheld the action of the executive. The report was adopted. A long debate took place on the negro question. The report recommended the admission of negroes on an equal footing. Resolutions were passed disapproving of the action of ihe Right Worthy Grand Lodge of America, and affirming that there is no necessity for allegiance to it. Wellington, January 10. The Hon Mr McLean proceeds to Auck Auckland by the Roturua on Friday, and thence by the same steamer to Sydney to attend the cable conference. The Primitive Methodist Conference was concluded to-day. The church reports of last year show increased prosperity. Five uew churches have been built ; two additional ministers are on their way out from England, others are Bhortly expected. At the criminal fcepsiou of the District Court to-day, before Judge Ward, Morgan Harper, for larceny, against whom was a a previous conviction in Ghristchurch, was sentenced to two years with hard labor ; Patrick Callaghan, for assault and bodily harm againeb Johu Patrick Davis, residing with Mary Ana Greaves in a house of illfame here, was sentenced to one year's imprisonment with hard labor. Dunedin, January 10. The City Council met this afternoon, for the purpose of considering the tenders which had been received for the privilege of constructing tramways within the city. The fodowing were read :—Within the city— Jam?s Gore, £450 ; D. Proudfoot, £3lO ; D Berry, £240, with 10 per cent of profits added, or in lieu thereof, £4OO. Including city s<nd suburb*—Gore, £485 ; Proudfoot, £360. Tho insiders were referred to the committee to report. Oleolite was scratched for the Dunedin Cup at ten minutes to threo this afternoon. Mr Henry Driver has received a telegram to-day stating that at Mossrs Robertson Bros sale of short'horn cattle, held at Colac, Victoria, on the sth inst, 190 head brought £20,000; forty head were pedigree cattle, the remainder being from the general herd. At a meeting of the Presbyterian Synod, held yesterday, a very aoriinonious discussion took place upon the " State of Religion."
Mr H. J. Bennett, agent for the AllEngland Eleven, and the Rev Father Kelly, S.J., the well known Melbourne lecturer, arrived in Dunedin yesterday. Mrs Scott Siddons opens at the Princess Theatre on Monday evening, in "Romeo and Juliet."
The following is the final selection of the Otago team :—Messrs Bouch, Cargill, Clarke, Meares, Millington, "Morrison, Nicholls, Paramor, Reade, Rose, and Rhodes. The team will meet this afternoon to elect their captain. Mr Reade is expected in to-day. Messrs Millington and Nicholls will go to Christchurch direct from Oamaru, and the rest of the team will leave per Taranaki on Friday. The Dunedin players selected were all on the oval yesterday afternoon, but the very soft state of the ground prevented anything but field practice being indulged in.
