The evidence went to show that deceased had been suffering from heart disease during the past four years, but in the last twelve months had not been attended by the doctor. On the day of her death she was sitting up in bed, propped with pillows, and reading when her husband went out to procure some food for her, and on his return he found her still in a sitting position, her head laid back, her hand on the book, but life was quite extinct. The jury found a verdict that " Deceased died from natural causes, and not otherwise."

Intestment Society.—7he half-yearly meeting of the Friends of Labor Loan and Investment Society was held at the Market Hotel on Monday evening last, and was largely attended. Mr Otley, the secretary, read the report and balance-sheet, from which it appeared that the society, which was established eight months ago, now numbered 108 members, holding 199 shares. The capital of the society amounts to £267 lis lid, which has been nearly all invested in loans to members. Bince the commencement of the society loans have been granted to the amount of £438, and £217 has been repaid. The amount of profit realised on the half year is £44 12s lid, and the secretary recommended that a dividend of 10 per cent should be declared for the half year, which would amount to £22 6s, leaving a reserve fund of £22 6s lid. The report and balance-sheet were adopted, and a dividend of 10 per cent for the half year was declared and added to members' stock. The meeting then proceeded to elect officers in room of those whose term had expired, with the following result: —President, Mr Brooker (reelected); cashier, Mr Collins; committee— Messrs Reid, Graham, and Cronin. A vote of thanks to the officers for the efficient way in which they had conducted the business of the society terminated the proceedings. Cathedral Guild.—A general meeting of members was held last evening at the College Library, the Very Rev the Dean of Christchurch, vice-president, in the chair. There was not a large attendance. The rev chairman said he regretted to see so small an audience present, which was, however, no doubt owing to counter attractions elsewhere. Two papers of interest would be read that evening. The work of the Cathedral, now undertaken by the Guild, was the first column of the arch of the nave. He was not quite sure this was actually in progress at the present time, as very large blocks of stone would be required, and it was necessary that all the columns should be of the same stone, and of best quality. There was still funds in hand, and the Guild had done good service by keeping alive the zeal iu connection with the work of the Cathedral. He had to make an apology for the absence of the choir that evening through an inadvertence, but doubtless at their next meeting the want of music that night would be made up for. Interesting papers were then read by Rev T. Flavell on " Lessing's Laocoon," and by Mr H. Selwyn Smith on "The Progress, Work, and Duty of the Church of England in the Colonies," and after votes of thanks had been passed, the meeting closed with prayer.
