NEW SHIPPING COMPANY. ARRIVAL OF MRS SCOTT SIDDONS. Auckland, January 9. Sailed—Hawea, for South. The Auckland Volunteers intend to present a testimonial to Major Gordon. Rev J. Cose, of Sydney, has refused a call from the Presbyterians of Rcmuera. The Auckland and Thames oarsmen, to compete at Nelson Regatta, left by the Hawea. The Auckland men take the Batswing, pairoared boat, and theThamesmcn a four-oared outrigger. The Grand Lodge of Good Templars was formally opened to-day. Fifty-one representatives were present, and thirty-two visitors. The Grand Chief Tjmplar's annual report was eatiafactory. At a meeting of the Eden County Council to-day Dr Wallis moved—" That the third schedule of the Act be not brought into operation." An amendment for an adjournment till to-morrow week was carried. The trial of Curtin for the murder of Denis Shanaghan is proceeding. Mrs Shanaghan gave evidence that two months before the murder she and a girl named Annie McDonald on their way from church went into Curtin's and had tea. At a meeting of the Waste Lands Board a letter from Mr James Mackay enclosed returns of 791,433 acres at the Thames under negotiation. The lands actually acquired were thirty-one blocks, comprising 277,867 acres, and of this 226,610 ;acres were transferred to the Board. The Board passed a resolution requesting the Gcvernor to place under the Board's administration all lands, the purchase of which is complete at the Thames. Telegrams were rect ived from Mr Broomhall, approving of th*e conditions offered by the Board, excepting a few minor points, on which he promised to write fully. I he question was postponed. A letter was read from Mr Prichard, approving of the terms proposed, subject to the approval of the association in England. A Jetter was read from the Under-Secretary of Crown Lauds transferring to the Board the Patutuhi block at Poverty Bay, cf twenty thousand acres. Auckland, January' 10. In the thirty-second half-yearly report of New Zealand Insurance Company the .directors state that the nett premiums received were £73,389 15s 3d ; interest, rent, and transfer fees, £9504 3s 5d ; with amount received from last half year, total., £89,193 16s ; losses paid and provided for, £53,510 18s 6d. After carrying £35,000 to re insurance fund, which now stands at £70,000, there remains a balance to profit and loss of £19,660 12s lOd ; recommended to be appropriated to the payment of a dividend, £15,000 ; carried forward to next half year, £466012s lOd. (The accounts of the old company are closed. The amount of paid up capital, £200,000. Mr J. L. Wilson has been appointed to the vacancy caused by the death of Mr W. C. Wilson. Wellington, January 9. Sailed, the Elizabeth Conway, for Lyttelton via Pelorus sound, where she goes for timber. A deputation from the corporation waited upon the Premier to request the Government to hand over the reclaimed land, when the contract is completed, upon certain terms. The Premier replied that it was anticipated when the accounts were made up that the Wellington provincial district would be indebted to the General Government about £40,000, and that it was exceedingly probable the land would be sold, and a purchaser found immediately. Hokitika, January 10. Mr Henry Young has purchased Messrs Learmonth and Pasty's 600 acre lease, Mount Rangitoto, for £SOO cash, and £SOOO in paid up shares on the formation of the company. The lease adjoins the prospectors' mine, and is between that and Hudson's. The mine is to be called the New Zealand Silver Mining Company ; to be registered under the Joint Stock Companies Act, 1860, with a capital of forty thousand pounds, in eight thousand shares of five pounds each; the promoters, fifteen in number, reserve two thousand paid-up shares, and receive one thousand in cash on the formation of the company. Mr Young has engaged the services of the original prospectors, and starts for the mine in a few days. Dunedin, January 10. The Presbyterian Synod of Otago and Southland met last night. The Rev, Mr Gow, of St. Andrew's Church, was elected moderator, and delivered the usual opening address. A telegram has been received from London announcing that the Albion Shipping Company and Messrs Shaw, Saville and Co have amalgamated, forming a company with a capital of £1,000,000. Mr J. P. Maitland took his seat this morning as Chief Commissionerjof the Waste Lands Board of Otago. He made a few remarks bspeaking the forbearance of the Board as coming after two such experienced men as Messrs J. T. Thomson and A. C. Strode. Mr W. Evans, agent for the Davenport Brothers, is now in Dunedin making arrangements for their appearance. Mrs Scott Siddons arrived in Dunedin from Melbourne to-day. [from our own correspondent.] Dunudin, January 10. The Dunedin team leave on Friday. It is doubtful whether Mr Read will be able to go. Messrs Collinson, Godby, Lathbury, and Downes could not get away. The men are in good form.
