NEWS OF THE DAY.
I.O.O.F.—The Avon Lodge 1.0.0. F., will meet at the Orange Hall this evening, at half-past seven o’clock. The Ministry.— Hon E. Richardson has resigned his seat in the Executive and his portfolio of Member of Public Works. Mr Donald Reid has been sworn in a member of the Executive. Bible Christian Denomination.—A meeting of persons desirous of a mission of the above being opened in Christchurch will be held at the Temperance Hall, Gloucester street, on Wednesday next at 7,30 p.m. Christchurch Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Society. —The annual general meeting of members, for the election of officers for the ensuing year, will be held at Warner’s Hotel, on Wednesday next, at 8 p.m. Members’ tickets may be obtained from the hon treasurer at the meeting. School Committees. —Meetings of householders for the election of members to serve on the Prebbleton, Little River, and Le Bon’s Bay school committees will be held at the schools of these districts on Thursday, 11th insfc, at 7p m. If necessary a poll will be taken on Wednesday, 17 th inst. Good Temtlary.— A public meeting of members and non-members of the order will be held this evening, at the Oddfellows’ Hall, for the purpose of advocating the principles of Good Templary. The meeting will be addressed by Bro Jago, G.W.C.T., from Dunedin, and other influential members of the order. The chair will be taken at I 8 p.m., and admission free. The Champion Sailing Race.— The challenge of the XXX has been accepted by the schooners Minnehaha, Transit, and Belle Brandon, and the match takes place tomorrow morning at ten, It will be sailed over same course as on regatta day, and under Lytteltoq Regatta rqles. The running off the dead heat between the Rangitikei’s and Brskine’s boats takes place at 2 p.m. same day, so that it will be quite a miniature regatta. The p.s. Titan is advertised to follow the sailing races with excursionists. Lyttelton Colonists’ Society.- -The monthly committee meeting was held on Wednesday evening last, the president (Mr H. N. Nalder) occupied the chair. A letter was read from Mr A. Blakiston, assistantsecretary, stating £SO had been allocated out of vote for public libraries for Lyttelton Colonists’ Society. The treasurer stated he had received the sum mentioned in letter from Government, and other moneys, amounting to £SB 7s in nil. Accounts amounting to £l2 8s 5d were passed for payment, The president said he had asked Messrs Sutton and Weastall to give estimate of proposed alterations, but they had not yet dons so. The meeting then adjourned. R.M. Court, Christchurch.— Both the civil and criminal business at this Court has increased so much within the last few months that it has been found necessary to make some alteration in the system hitherto existing, with a view to preventing delay to suitors on Thursdays, which has for some time past been unavoidable. During yest rday’s sitting Mr Hellish stated that the weekly police cases would for the future be taken on Mondays instead of Thursdays, so as to leave the tatter days more free for the civil cases, which will now be taken on Thursdays at eleven o’clock instead of halfpast one as formerly. The civil sittings on Tuesdays and Wednesdays will be held at eleven as usual, A memorial is to be erected in honour of Sir Rowland Hill, the originator of the penny postage, now in his eighty-fith year, at Kidderminster, his native place, to which more than £2OOO has bee» already contributed,
