The position of affairs has assumed a grave aspect. The Porte submitted counter proposals. The envoys met under the Presidency of General Ignatieff, and decided to adhere to the original programme. The conference afterwards met, when Lord Salisbury announced the resolution of the Turkish delegates declining to discuss the questions of an intercommission, of gendarmes, or extension of Servia. The envoy asked the Turkish delegates if their refusal was to be considered absolute. They promised to refer to the Porte, and give a final answer on Thursday. AUSTRALIA. THE MAIL STEAMERS. Sydney, January 4. The Suez mail will arrive at Adelaide tonight. The Torres Straits mail reached Sydney to-day. There are no signs of the City of Sydney. The Australia arrived this morning, and was quarantined. THE CRICKET MATCH. Sydney, January 4. The Ballarat match was a drawn one. The Englishmen in the second innings scored 179. Oharlwood, 66 ; Dlyett, 36 ; Pooley, 30, SUFFERING AT .SEA. Sydney, January 4. The ship West Australian, from London to Adelaide, spoke the brig Harbor Grace, from Africa to Liverpool, The crew were starving Three died of yellow fever. For five days they had nothing but palm nuts to sustain life. INTERPROVINCIAL, Auckland, January 4, The value of imports for Auckland for the quarter ending December were £134,251, and the exports for the same period £206,140. A fire in the New North Road to-day destroyed the bouse of a settler named Clark. It was insured in the Norwich Union for £IOO. The New Zealand Shipping Company have presented a cup, value £2B, for the Auckland regatta, SUPREME COURT. Auckland, January 4. At the Supreme Court alary Ann Cane pleaded “ Guilty " to concealment of birth. Judge Gillies commiserated her unhappy condition, and regretted he could not punish her seducer. He sentenced her to twelve months’ imprisonment. Thomas Capper, for uttering a forged order for £5, received nine months; Francis Lynch, charged with appearing at Coromandel as voter, and falsely answering to the name of William Wright, of Wangapoua, pleaded ignorance and having done the act at the suggestion of another, sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment. Mr Wareham, of the waste lands department, appeared to answer a charge of contempt of Court in writing a letter to Judge Gillies concerning the cause of a prisoner named Draper. Mr Wareham pleaded ignorance. The Judge severely admonished him and discharged him. Dr J. G. Smith has been sent to the quarantine station. NARROW ESCAPE. Geahamstown, January 5. Mrs Fisher, of Christchurch, landing from the Auckland steamer last night, walked over the Grahamstown wharf, but was promptly rescued by two men who were near. She had an infant in her arms, but neither was hurt. COUNTY ELECTIONS. Wellington, January 4. Owing to the serious indisposition of Lady tformaaty bis Excellency's intended visit
to the South has been indefinitely postponed. Hon B. Richardson this afternoon resigned his seat in the Executive, and his portfolio as Minister for Public Works. Mr Donald Reid was sworn in as member of the Executive. The distribution of the portfolios is not finally arranged. The first meeting of a large number of County Councils was held to-day, at noon. In the majority of instances the business was purely formal, such as the election of chairman and secretary. The consideration of the adoption of the whole or only portion has been adjourned in nearly every case. Wellington, January 5. At the Supreme Court this morning, McCann, an elderly man, convicted for rape on a young girl, was sentenced to twelve years’ hard labor and two whippings of thirty lashes each. Coleman, convicted of an attempt to murder his wife, had sentence deferred till Monday. Dunedin, January 4. The newly constituted Harbor Board met this afternoon. The business was of a formal character, beyond the appointing Mr W. H, Reynolds as permanent chairman. The Otago County Councils met to-day. The following chairmen were appointed : Peninsula, Mr John Maclean; Taieii, Mr James Fulton ; Lawrence, Mr Poynter; Vincent, Mr Pyke ; Waikonaiti, Mr James Green; Naseby, Mr A. Holland ; Queenstown, Mr McArdell. The Waikonaiti Council resolved to bring the whole of the Act into force. The Supreme Couut sittings were continued to-day, when Etty Johnstone, for stealing, was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment; William Stanley, for obtaining goods under false pretences, to three years’penal servitude, and Michael Slattery, charged with rape, was acquitted. The Government have decided to place the entire management of the Dunedin hospital in the hands of a committee. As to the necessary funds for carrying on efficiently, the Government will be prepared to subsidise subscriptions to the extent of £2 for every £1 collected. Justices of the Peace Court, Dunedin, will in future be taken by Mr J. W. Watt, sheriff of the Supreme Court. COMMERCIAL. Dunedin, January 5. In the share market prices are as follows : —Colonial Bank, 34s to 35s ; National Insurance, 25s to 25s 6d; Standard, 13s 6d to 14s; South British, £3 8s ; Bank of New Zeal md, £l9 ; National Bank, 68s ; Mosgiel Wollen Factory, 435. The grain market has been exceedingly quiet during the holidays. Wheat is out of the market, quotations nominal ; oats meet with moderate demand at 2s 2d to 2s 3d, for good to prime feed up to 2s 4d for milling ; barley for feeding and milling purposes is in improved request at 2s 9d to 3s 3d, malting nominally 4s, but almost unsaleable.
