FLOWER SHOW.
A show of flowers in connection with the monthly meeting of the Horticultural Society, was held yesterday evening in Mr Alport’s auction rooms. Taken as a whole, of course judging it simply on the unpretending scale on which it was projected, the flowers, exhibited, especially the verbenas, were very good. With all due deference to the judge, we must decidedly d.ssent from the awards in the verbena and carnations in the open classes. Mr Crooks.’ stand of verbenas were v°ry flue, well grown, and even, the trusses being excellent, while the first prize were decidedly uneven, and not to be compared in point of merit to those exhibited by Mr Crooks. The stand of Mr Greenaway, though possessing one or two good lots, was yet very uneven, and should have been awarded third prize, Mr Crooks first, and Messrs Nairn and Sons second. This was patent even to the most casual observer and we are at a loss to account for the award. In the carnations the same' error occurred, Mr Greenaway's exhibit being incontestably by far the better of the two. He had a very fine Sir G. Bowen, In the amateur class for cut blooms, Mr Reude had a very fine collection, includinga good bloom of Lilium excelsiura and others Mv Gordon’s stand ought to have had second prize, as it was much better arranged, and contained more varieties than Mr Craw’s. Mr Reade exhibited a very fine collection of verbenas, amongst which were some fine trusses of Sultana and Jessie. The show of fruit, though small, was very good. Mr Marsh had two fine Queen Ann melons, and Mr Crook’s raspberries, and Mr Craw’s gooseberries were especially worth notice. Mr Greenaway had a splendid collection of forty-two varieties of roses, which, considering the late period of the seanon, were in ■jplendid condition. In the vegetable class Mr Jackman had fine exhibits of kidney and round potatoes and peas and Mr Chudley some good cucumbers and blight-proof cabbages. Mr Beale's pansies, chough there were some inferior blooms in the stand, were yet good as & whole, Mr B. Chudley acted as judge,,
