NEWS OF THE DAY.
L.O.L—The usual monthly meeting of L O.L, 190 24, will take place this evening at the Orange Hall, at 7.30. Civil sittings —The only case for trial by common jury on the civil side of the Supreme Court having been withdrawn, the jurors summoned for Monday next will not be requited to attend. Drapers’ Association,— The half-yearly meeting of the Drapers’ and Clothiers’ Association will be held at the Foresters’ Hall on Monday next, January Bth, at 8 p.m. The business before the meeting will be the election of officers and the reception of reports. Colonial Prize Firing —The following are the representatives for Canterbury at the forthcoming colonial prize firing, viz.: — Carbine representatives Sergeant Fox, Christchurch Artillery, 174 points ; Sergeant Hill, do, 171 points (extra representative). Colonial rifle representatives Corporal Perrin, No 5 company, 167 points; Volunteer Parker, City Guards, 164 points ; Volunteer Hayman, No 5 company, 163 points (extra) ; Corporal Campbell, No 5 company (extra). The Representative Grew —The crew of the Cam, of the Cure Boating Club, Kaiapoi, which is to be our representative in the interprovincial regatta, leaves for Nelson per the s s Taupo, expected to leave Lyttelton on Tuesday next. It was intended by this Ciub to enter a boat in the pairoared race, and the Canterbury Rowing Club promised the loan of a pair-oar, but as the champion pair-oar race takes place immediately before the four-oared event, it has nee a decided to save the energies of the crew for the great struggle. I - -■ 8t Peter’s Church, Akaboa. — The midnight sendee was, held on Sunray even* ing (Now Year’s eve), at which a large congregation was present. The service began at 11 pm with the Litany, which was followed by the hymn “ A few more years shall roll the ante communion service was then said, and the hymn “ Days and moments quickly flying ” was sung At the close of the Sermon, which was preached by the incumbent from the text St Luke xiii, 7,8, 9. the whole congregation knelt fir a few moments in silent prayer; after which, the New Year was ushered in by singing “ The year is gone beyond recall.” The service, which was very solemn and impreisive, was closed by the Benediction. Board or Education.— Ther! was & lengthy sitting of the Board of Education yesterday, at which a large amounl: of business, principally of a routine character, was’ transacted. The main points of in terest was the acceptance of a tender for the erection of an infant school in Lytteltor, and the passing of a resolution affirming the desirability of the General Government issuing free passes on the railway to child cen residing more than two miles from ii. district school, subject to the recommendation of the chairman of the Board. Messrs Garrick and Oowlishaw were appointed solicitors to the Board. The Board adjourned for a week. Severe Hail Storm. —On Tuesday afternoon a very severe storm passed over a corner of the Ellesmere district. At the time there was a strong gale of wind blowing from the south-west, the clouds travelling at a tremendous rate, accompanied with loud claps of thunder and vivid flashes of lightning. Suddenly it commenced to rain, and then hail, and for about a quarter of an hour hail stones far larger that ordinary marbles fell. Luckily the duration of the storm was short, but it sufficed to do conside’' Me damage to the heavy crops that it passed over, some paddocks of cats being completely flattened, as if a roller had been driven over them. The storm appeared to cross Lake Ellesmere close to the Ninetymile Beach on to the Peninsula by Little River, where, from all appearance s, it must have been felt very severely. Cricket. —The following match is arranged to be played at Hagley Park on Saturday next : Eleven v Fifteen from those selected to practice for the Otago and All-England Eleven matches. The Eleven —Messrs Alpe, Baker, D’Emden, E. Fowler, C. Frith, Fuller, Moore, Neilson, Stevens, Secretan, and Wood. The Fifteen—Ashby, Alington, E. Ootterill, Dickenson, Dixon, J. Fowler, W. Frith, Izard, Leech, Ollivier, Palmer, Reeder, Sampson, Sweet, Turner, and Whiles. Play is to commence at 2.30 sharp, Ihe Otago match being arranged for the 17th inst, all players are requested to attend. A match has been arranged between the Rangiora and Gust Clubs, to be played at Rangiora on Saturday next. The Rangiora players will be selected from the following, viz. :—W. A. Burt, Dumergue, B. R. Good, Hurse, Hunnibell, Merton, Morris, Martin, M. H, Smith, Turfon, Terry, Wright, Williams. We hear that a member of the Rangiora Club offers to give a bat to the higher scorer on the Rangiora side in this match. Selwyn County Council. The first meeting of the Selwyn County Council took place at noon to-day in the Provincial Council Chamber. All the members for th« various ridings were present, except Mr Fitzroy, member for the Ellesmere riding. After the proclamation fixing the datejand place of meeting had been read, Mr Eolleston moved the appointment of the Hon John Hall as chairman of the Council. Hon John Hall however declined, on the ground of the distance at which he resided from town. The nomination was then withdrawn, and Hon John Hall nominated Mr Eolleston, which was carried. A notification was received that £8950 had been placed at the credit of the Council for the Malvern water supply, and sheep dip at the Waiau. Mr C. H. Williams was appointed clerk to the Council temporarily. The Chairman was requested to apply to the General Government for the use of the Provincial Council Chambers temporarily for the meetings of the Council. A committee was appointed to consider the mode of election of the two members of the Lyttelton Ha rbor Board, elected by the Council. A letter was received from Mr R. J. S. Harman, intimating that lie was a candidate for one of the seats on the Harbour Board at the disposal of the Council. After notices of motion had been given, the Council adjourned until Wednesday next at noon.
