NEWS OF THE DAY
Board of Health. —At the sitting of the Local Board of Health, to-day, Mr W. Pearce was chosen to fill the office of chief inspector of nuisances. There were fortyrive applications. I-YTTELTON BOROTJaH SCHOOL. k meeting of this commiitee was held on Friday evening last, at which Mr P. Hewitt was elected caretaker of the school. Waterloo House Picnic.—On Saturday Mr Hobday entertained the whole of his staff at a picnic. New Brighton was the place selected, and the day was very pleasantly spent in a variety of sports. A dance in the evening concluded a very enjoyable day. Catholic Schools.—On Saturday last the various Catholic schools of the district celebrated Anniversary Day by a tea meeting, provided by the ladies of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Christchurch, in the Barbadoes street schoolroom, at which about 350 persons sat down. The spread was an exceptional one, and delicacies had been prepared not generally seen at meetings of the kind. After tea an adjournment was made to the paddock at the rear of the schoolroom, and a number of scratoh races improvised among the juvenile portion of the visitors, which whiled away the time until darkness had set in, when the company reassembled in the schoolroom for the concert. The following is the programme which had been provided : —Duet (pianoforte) Overture to Martha, Madam and Miss,Winter; duet from "La Traviata," Miss and Mr Melchor Winter .(encored) ; song, " The Desert," Mr A, P. rth6ath, encored, and gave " The charming girl," from the "Lily of Killarney"; trio, "My lady the Countess," by the Misses and Mr Winter (encored) ; reading, " Lines on the school of the old Church of Rome," Mr J. Joyce (loudly applauded, and was compelled to repeat the reading); Bong, " Erin my country," Miss Winter, encored, and gave " How to aßk and how to have" ; pianoforte solo selections from " II Trovatore," Madame Winter ; song, " Nora darling," Mr Winter ; song, " Little golden hair," Miss Phoebe Winter ; song, from " II Barbiere," Mr B. A. Loughnan (encored). The concert was brought to a close with the quartette " Good night," from "Martha", opinions being generally expressed that it was the most enjoyable entertainment of the kind yet held in the schoolroom. Madam Winter presided at the piano during the evening with her usual ability. At the termination of the concert an exhibition of fireworks, under the direction of Messrs Halle and Sheath, took place in the schoolroom grounds, and passed off very successfully. The schoolroom had been very tastefully decorated by the committee, who had worked hard during the morning. The proceeds of the day will be devoted to the schools fund.
