NEWS OF THE DAY.
L.O.L.—The usual monthly meetiug of No 3 Lodge will be held at 7.30 p.m. this evening in the Orange Hall, Worcester street. City Rates.—A sum of £ls was passed at last night’s sitting of the Council to be expended in summoning defaulting ratepayers. I-'kating Rink.— -The rink was fairly attended last evening, and the skating of Mr Taylor and Lillie, as usual, received loud plaudits. Representative Firing —The following were the scores made by the Canterbury yeomanry Cavalry yesterday on their second competition for representatives ; Trooper Dunbar, 86; Corporal Judge, 77 ; Sergeant Major Anson, 76. ACCIDENT AT Kaiapoi —On Saturday Mr Taylor slipped on the concrete flagging near Burnip’s Hotel, and in his fall one of his legs was broken between the knee and ankle joints. He was lifted up by Constable Haldane, and taken into the hotel where he was attended by Dr Dudley. The Sumner Road.—The contractors for widening the Sumner road on the Cnristchurch side of the cutting are pushing on with the work. When finished, this improvement will be a great boon, and will remove the objections which have existed to this part of the road on account of the danger. Inspector of Nuisances,—At the meet" ing of the Local Board of Health, held yesterday, it was decided to invite applications for the office of chief inspector of nuisances under the Public Health Act, at a salary of £275 per annum. Applications will have to be sent in before 10 a.m. on the 18th instant. Asphalte Footpaths. Or Nathan’s motion, allocating £BOOO out of the Provincial grant lately received, in asphalting the footpaths throughout the city, was carried last night after a slight discussion Notice of motion was given by the mover to appoint a committee at next sitting to take into consideration the carrying out of this work,
Post Sessional Utterances. —Mr W. 1 Montgomery, M.H.R, for Akaroa, will address his constituents at the Town Hall, Akaroa, on Tuesday evening next, at 7.30 p.m. The Glee Club Concert. —His Worship the Mayor, as a member of the committee of the concert arranged for the benefit of Mrs D, Dunlop, has received a cheque for £l2 10s, the net proceeds of the concert, which amount will be added to the fund in hand, to be carried out in accordance with a resolution passed by the committee. Election op Mayor. The annual election of Mayor of the city for the year 1877 has been fixed for the 20th instant. Candidates will have to be nominated before 4 p.m. of the 12 h instant in the usual form, by leaving notice at the office of the town clerk. At the request of his Worship the Mayor, who has hardly recovered from his late severe illness, Mr G. L, Lee has been appointed returning officer. Eangiora Fire Brigade. —The members of this brigade, together with the employees at the railway station, met on Saturday evening at Roberts’ Club Hotel, to bid farewell to one of their number, Mr J. B. Gould, who is appointed station master at North Rangitata. Mr Tonge presided, and Mr Johnston, superintendent of the fire brigade, was croupier. The health and prosperity of the guest was proposed by the latter in flattering terms, and responded to by the company which numbered more than thirty. Other toasts followed, viz, “ Success to the Rangiora Fire Brigade,” to which Mr Johnston replied, “ The Railway Department,’’ to which Mr Tonge replied, &c, &c, and the harmony of the evening was kept up till the closing hour. A.I.O.O.P.—The ceremony of opening the new Lodge of the Ancient Independent Order of Oddfellows here, and the installation of the officers, took place last evening, in the Orange Hall. The grand officers conducting the ceremony were D.D.G.M. Bro A. J. Bowers, P.D.DG.M. T. B. Price, P.G.M. White, N.G. B. Wallace, C.S. E. Ball, P.S. Bros Pounce and Schwartz. The ceremony of opening the lodge, which was named the Avon, was then carried out according to the ritual of the order. Thirtytwo new members were initiated, and two joined by clearances. The following brethren were elected as officers of the lodge for the ensuing term, viz : —N.G, Bro B. Patterson ; V.G, Bro C. Lezard ; secretary, Bro G. M. Walton ; treasurer, Bro O. Paget; collector, Bro A. Friar ; warden, Bro A, Schwartz ; R.H.S. to N.G, Bro A. Ringwood ; L.H.B. to N.G, Bro H. S. Price ; R.H.S, to V.G, Bro H. D. Manning ; L.H.S. to V.G, Bro V. Almao ; R.S S. Bro B. A, Bdgerer ; L.S.S, Bro Combrer; trustees, Bros Fleming, Favelle, Manning, and Almao. The lodge having been duly closed, the brethren adjourned to a banquet at the Britannia Hotel, where the usual loyal and fraternal toasts were done due honor to.
