There was a good deal of strong work done on Thursday morniug. Ted Cutts sent Guy Faux a strong gallop twice round the plough. He was accompanied the first time with Tara and finished with Lady of the Lake. At the three-quarter mile post the last time round the two spurted for half a mile or so at a clinking pace, and the cheanut mare showed a good turn of fooL The old horse went freely and well, and will be very formidable at the coming meeting. Moose, stripped, was sent twice round at a steady gallop, and the Fanny Fisher colt Kingfisher did slow work. Dead Heat and Ariel went a splendid gallop of about two miles and a half, the pace being a docker throughout. Both went very well indeed, and pulled up sound. Fishhook cantered on the plough, and Songster and Maroro were treated to a pretty strong gallop once round. Danebury, Fallacy, and Lady Lea were Bent
I once round. The pace was made rather too strong for Lady Lea, who soon fell back. Middleton and Cloth of Gold went twice with the sweaters on round the plough, and Wrangler also sweated. Templeton and Folle Parine went a slow canter, and Puugawerewere only did walking exercise. Nectar and Tommy Dodd did slow work by themselves, and Tadmor and Rob Roy were sent once round at top. Both went very well, and I hear they made very good time. Zetland worked on the plough by himself. On Friday morning Guy Faux, Maroro, and (Songster were sent twice round the plough at a good pace, and Fishhook went a rattliDg gallop of about a mile and a half. Lady of the Lake went twice round, and Nectar and Moose did a useful gallop of about three miles; Ariel and Dead Heat together were sent a fair gallop once round; Punga and Templeton were sent twice round, being picked up the last time by Folle Farine. It was one of Punga's good days, and she went splendidly. Fallacy, in company with Danebury and Lady Lea, went a good gallop of about three miles, Danebury going remarkably well, Lady Lea being outpaced. Middleton, Cloth of Gold, and Wrangler went about a mile and a half, Cloth of Gold going in good form. Zetland went a steady three mile gallop, and Titania did a sht»rp spin of about a mile by herself. Tommy Dodd and Rob Roy went together about three miles at a fair pace, the latter going in good style. Tasso and the Ethelred filly were sent for three miles at a steady pace, while Mr Walter's team did not put in an appearance till late. The acceptances for the Free Handicap have appeared, and I think will probably surprise many. Maroro, Ngaro, and Tadmor have all been pretty freely backed, and there will be some wailing over the change in the programme. Ngaro's chance must be thought by her owner pretty good, as Ariel was certainly well in, and if George Cutts prefers trusiiug to the mare, it is certain he has a good reason for so doing. I fancy the race will lie between Ngaro and Tadmor, for the distance will suit the son of Brunette, and he ought to go from end to end. Pungawerewere should be dangerous, but I think the winner will be found in Tadmor. The four nominated in the Steeplechase have all accepted, and as I said in my last it looks a good thing on paper for Zetland. The betting market is very quiet, but the following is about the state of the odds at present. Derby—4 to 1 agst Dead Heat and Danebury, 5 to 1 agst Fanny Fisher colt, 6 to 1 Fallacy, 30 to 1 the rest; 100 to 20 ia offered on the field for both Cup and C.J.C. Your readers will be sorry to hear that Mr Griffith has sustained another loss, Brunette's foal by Traducer died yesterday. Sinbad.
