MARRIED v SINGLE, M.C.C.C.
The M.C.C C. continued their match between Married and Single, the scores being 69 and 59 respectively. The Single commenced their second innings with J, Fowler and D’Emden, but the former was dismissed by a good catch by Alpe at long stop, but Ashby, who succeeded him, was more successful, and with D’Emden soon increased the score to 40 by really good play by both batsmen. Ashby now gave a chance, which was finally held. His score of 16 was well aud quickly made, by three 3’s, three 2’s, &c. Fairhurst did not stay long, but Watson and D'Emden caused the bowlers to change ends, but without effect, until the score had reached 78, when D’Emden played too late for a shooter from Fuller. Sampson caused no trouble, and soon afterwards Watson was run out, after making 16 by some pretty play. At one time it seemed as if the innings would come to a quick termination, but Murray aud Hart land put the bowlers at defiance, and scored very quickly. A change was tried but without effect, but at last Hartlaud found a ball from Fuller too much for him. He made 19 by a 5, two 4s, two 2’s, &c. Murray was not out for 18, made by a 4, two 3's, two 2’s, &c. The innings closed for 123, leaving the. Married 114 to get to win, which they at once set to work to accomplish. Very few runs came from the first few wickets, until Fuller and Sweet got together, when th( y increased the score from 26 to 48 before a separation was caused by J. Fowler catching Fuller, who had put together 10 by free hitting. The next two wickets did not alter the score, but Williams made a long stand, and kept up his wickets, while Sweet by some fine batting made runs, Williams was at last run out, but not until he had astonished every one by making 12. Sweet was at last bowled by Ashby when the total had reached 84, Mercer being not out for 2. Sweet’s score was well put together, and his batting showed good defence combined with free hitting. Three 3’s and four 2’s were his principal hits. The Single thus won the match by 29 runs. The following ia the score of the match:—

The above match was played at Papanui on the 21st and 28th instants, when the representatives of the newly formed M.C.C.C, scored their first victory by an innings and 28 runs. For the visitors Reeder set his men a good example with a steady, chanceless contribution of 43, comprising one 4, three 3’s, six 2’s, &c, the chief merit ofj which lay in its being made at a time when runs were badly needed. Atack responded with 22 not out, which, bar an easy chance to longstop. were very creditably made, and consisted of one 5, one 4, one 3, three 2’s, &c. Gray also got into double figures ; his score of 13 included a couple of remarkably good cuts for 3 each. Total, 108. For the home team W. Horner, Matson’s sub., who quickly ran up 16, and U. Dickenson 10, were thejonly batsmen who made any show, and the innings closed for a total of 49. Their second venture, however, was still worse, only amounting to 31. Rev P. G. Brittan, who carried his bat all through the innings, being top score with 9, Hack next with 8.
