C.R.C. SCRATCH RACES.
A series of pair-oar scratch races took place on Saturday in connection with the 0.R.0., when some very good rowing was shown. There was a very good attendance of spectators, and generally the events were well contested. Mr Douglas acted as starter, and sent the boats away well together. We must not omit to speak in terms of commendation of the rowing of Grierson and Lean, which was excellent throughout the heats pulled by them. Altogether, considering that it was the first of the season, and rowed by scratch crews, the gathering of Saturday augurs well for the success of the boating season of 1876-7. Both boats got well away together. After a few strokes the Swan got the lead, and held it for about a hundred yards, when the Tui got on equal terms. On reaching the corner the Tui had a lead of about half a length, but the Swan having inside place got ahead on rounding. The Tui, however, put on a spurt, and after a hard tussle succeeded in winning a well pulled race by about half a length.
