ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
A special meeting ot the council of the society was held on Thursday afternoon, at the Gardens. Present—Sir Cracioft Wilson (president), Hon J. T. Peacock, Oolonel Packe, Dr Campbell, Messrs Wallace, and Farr. The secretary said he had called the meeting through a telegram received from the secretary of the Auckland Society, stating that the steamer to arrive there from San Francisco with the Californian ova wonld not come South, and suggesting a person being seat up there to look after them. A second telegram had been received, saying that the president of the Auckland Society had moved the Hon Mr Whitaker to sent! the Hinemoa to Auckland to meet the mail steamer and convey the ova to Lyttelton. He also suggested that the president of the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society might ask the Government to have this done. The president said he Would take imme - diate action in this direction at the conclusion of the meeting. The secretary read an offer from Mr 8. Budden, asking to be sent to Auckland to take charge o£ the ova. The offer was declined. At the suggestion of the Hon J. T. Peacock, it was decided to telegraph to the agents of the mail steamer at Auckland to retain the Canterbury ova on board if possible until the arrival of the society's representative. It was resolved to send the curator to Auckland by- first outgoing steamer to take charge of the Canterbury portion. The garden committee were authorised to give the curator all necessary and detailed instructions. Dr Campbell referred to the death o! the young trout for the Superintendent of Taranaki and Mr Redwood, and expressed his belief that the fish had died only through carelessness of the person who bad agreed to take charge of them. He would desire that the curator should take some trout to Taranaki on his way to Auckland. Every lot of fish on other occasions sent away by the society hitherto, had arrived safely at their destination, and a letter had been received one or two days ago from Timaru, saying that the ’as* lot, which consisted of 900, sent down a little while ago, had arrived without one single one being dead or even sick. It ran molded} ou the motion of 3r Campbell, io send 250 fieb to the Superintendent v! Taranaki, to be taken charge of by the ejrstor. On the motion of 3?r Campbell, the v-ame of Mr Mellish was added to the committee for distributing trout throughout the •* arious rivers in the province.
