NEWS OF THE DAY.
Our Volunteers. —We understand that it is the intention of several of our crack shots to visit Dunedin on the occasion of the forthcoming meeting of the Otago Rifle Association. It is to be hoped that they may return with substantial proofs of their prowess.
Found Dead. —The body of a man was found yesterday morning in the mouth of the outfall drain, East belt. It was afterwards recognised as William Chapman, laborer, who has been missing for two days. The body was removed to the morgue by Mr Inspector Buckley pending the inquest.
Very Sudden Death. —A very audden death occurred last evening at the Durham street Wesleyan Church. During the service Mrs Whittington, residing in Barbadoes street South, and who had attended with some members of her family, fell in what was thought to be a fainting fit. She was immediately carried into one of the ante-rooms, and Dr Guthrie, who happened to be seen passing at the time, was called in, and pronounced the lady to be dead. The body was removed to her late residence.
College Sports.— The annual sports in connection with Christ’s College will take place on the 19th instant, on the grounds attached to the College The following is the handicap for the Old Boy's Race :—J. W. Davis, scratch ; A. R. Johnston, 1 yard ; M. Davie, 6 yards ; W, Tosswill, 6 yards ; W. T. Robinson, 7 yards ; H. M'Cardell, 8 yards ; G. Matthias, 9 yards; J. Wachmann, T. Chapman, B. J. Ootterill and J, Millton, 10 yards ; W. Chapman and A, Mathias, 11 yards ; R. T. Searell, T. Searell, and T. M. Ollivier, 12 yards; H. Ootterill and R. F. Miles, 13 yards ; W. Ootterill and E. G. Hawkes, 14 yards ; W. Millton, J. H. Hawkes, and J, C. Martin, 15 yards.
INTERPROVINOIAL CRICKET MATCH.—A general meeting of cricketers was held at Warner’s Hotel, on Saturday evening, to elect an interprovincial match committee for the ensuing season, Mr C. C. Corfe occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance. The balance sheet of las: season was brought up, showing a balance to credit of £5 la Bd. A ballot was then taken for the election of the committee, when the following gentlemen were elected, viz, Messrs B. T. A. Fuller, J. S. D’Bmden, J. Fowler, G. Turner, H. iV. Moore, A. Ollivier, and T, S. Sweet (secretary and treasurer), It was decided to communicate with Mr E. 0, J. Stevens, and request him to bring before the Assembly the advisability of being able to charge an admission fee to the Hagley Park Cricket Ground. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the business of the meeting. Kaiapoi Oddfellows’ Hall, —For a period of years it has been under consideration by the Oddfellows’ Society in this town, to carry out the erection of a hall adapted to the requirements of members, and more commodious than the building in Raven street, as well as one which could profitably be let for public entertainments. The proposal has been held back principally for the want of a suitable site, but at the last meeting of the lodge an offer was made by Mr 0. Hansen, of Middleton’s Hotel, to give land with a frontage on Hilton street, sufficient on which to erect a hall to accommodate 500 persons. This was accepted with the best thanks of the members to Mr Hansen, and a committee comprising Bros R. M. Wright, R, W. Smith, B. Bate, and A. T. Clark was appointed as a building committee, and the plana of the new hall will be prepared in due course. The building will be in a central position in the town. Lyttelton Yachting Club.— A general meeting of be members of this club was held at the Royal Hotel, Lyttelton, on Friday afternoon, Mr W. Cameron occupying *- v >e chair. Boddingtoo t hea proposed that Mr P. res.gna. tion of the office of vice-commodoid be accepted with regret, and the honorary secretary be requested to convey to him the sincere and hearty thanks of the club for his past very valuable and kind services. That the hon secretary write and inform Mr Cass that this meetingis unanimous in asking him to reconsider his resignation of the rearcommodoreship, wishing he should continue to occupy the position. This was seconded by Mr W. H. Eyes, and carried unanimously. Mr W, D’Authreau proposed that Mr J. 0, Boddington be elected vice-commodore. This was seconded by Mr Byes, and carried unanimously. Mr Boddington proposed that Mr Eyes be elected treasurer j seconded by Mr D’Authreau and carried. Mr W. Cameron was elected to fill the vacancy on the committee caused by the appointment of Mr Eyes as treasurer. The hon treasurer reported that £3l 10s had been received for subscriptions since last meeting. Messrs H Baker and James Coombes were elected members of the club. The hon treasurer was authorised to pay the expenses incurred by the sub-committee in fitting out the Fleetwing. Mr Boddingtoa gave notice of motion te alteration and re-arrangement of rules. It was agreed that Saturday, the 21st instant, be appointed the opening day of the boating season ; procession to start at 2 30 p.m. ; the same to be under the management of the officers and committee of the deb; and that the hon secretary be instructed to invite the co-operation of all owners of yachts and boats. The meeting then adjourned after a vote of thanks to the chair,
