NEWS OF THE DAY.
O . Lyttelton Colonists' Society.—The annua! general meeting of the above socuty will be held this evening, at seven o'clock. Loyal Rangioba Lodge, I.O.O.F.—The fifteenth anniversary of the above lodge will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 18th, by an excursion to Bhodes' B iy. The steam launch Lyttellon will run during the day between the wharf and bay. Ban?c Extension, Akaroa.—A meetir g, convened by advertisement, was held ki Beecher's Hotel on Monday evening, to take steps to;procure additional banking accommodation for Akaroa and the surrounding ilis triefc. The chair was taken by Mr Ivess, proprietor of the Akaroa Mail, who explained the object of the meeting, and read a letter from J. Palmer, Esq, Union Bank. Who in j?eplv to an enquiry made, if he would establish a branch of the Union Bank in Akaroa, paid— KTh%t if a sufficient ajftount of deposits were guaranteed, he would open a branch at once." It was agreed to make a canvass of the district, to see what support could be obtained for the Union Bank. A requisition asking Mr Palmer to open a branch, was up and placed in the hands of Messrs Beeciier, Prank Houghton, Chad wick, and McGregor, who are now busily engaged in getting signatures j about fifty pgrspns have already signed it.
Cricket.—The first annual metting of the Sunnyside C.C. was held at the Asylum on Tuesday night, for the purpose of electing officers for the ensuing year, receiving the treasurer's report, 'and other business. The following gentlemen were elected:—Mr Rax worthy was uuanimously re-elected treasurer, Mr P. B. Petrie hon sec and custodian, Mr Clark umpire, Mr H. Page captain, and Mes Hrs Hill, Hopper, Newman, H. Beager, and J. Kinsman, committee. After several new members had been elected, the treasurer rend his report, which showfd the finances of the club to bt; in a vary flourishing con' dition, having received £l2 in donations, and about £l4 as the proceeds of an entertainment given in the Upper Heathcote schoolroom, over and above the usual entrance fees and subscriptions. A vote of thanks was passed to the retiring officers for the very able manner in which they have carried out their respective duties, and also to those of the public who so liberally contributed to the club last season, as they did much to place the club in its present prosperous position. It may be mentioned that the whole of the former cricket ground has been ploughed up and put in proper condition for playing upon.
